Japan Self Defense Force
Its worth correcting an error here:
The JSDF is NOT an army, since, according to the Japanese constitution, Japan is not allowed to have an army/navy/airforce. Article 9 of the Japanese constitution is currently very contentious, but formally, at least, japan is not allowed to have any form of military power (obviously, this is interpreted VERY broadly).
The Americans started building upo japanese military abilities soon after the Korean War started. Japan also has a policy of developing 'sandwich weapons' that is, the technology and some of the parts without actually stepping on thier US allies toes, or alienating the electorate which, still by quite a margin, supports Japan's disarmament stance.
