מערכת TACMS שתחליף את MLRS/HIMARS
http://www.defence24.pl/416730,amer...iet-taktycznych
US forces carry out construction work on a new type of tactical missiles, designed to supplement and eventually replace the missiles TACMS system MLRS / HIMARS. The new missiles will be characterized by an extended range of up to 500 km and the possibility of the use of twice the number of bullets in the gun.
The Department of Defense began preparations for the implementation of the Long-Range Precision Fires, which is to allow for the addition and replacement of rockets TACMS / ATACMS used in the MLRS launchers and M270 HIMARS. The new missiles will enter the armament US Army in the middle of the next decade. In principle, their introduction has significantly increase the firepower of artillery sub-units of the US Army.
Information on the financing of the Long Range Precision Fires appeared for the first time in the draft budget the Pentagon in 2015. Isolation of this project was to indicate that it concerns not the next stage of development of the missiles GMLRS, but to develop a new missile, replacing missiles MGM-140 ATACMS, also referred to as TACMS.
The program is expected to develop a missile that is capable of carrying out strikes on ground targets at distances from about 70 to at least 300 km (may be developed missile with a range of up to 500 km), including fighting purposes area, in all weather conditions and without putting at risk the crews of the aircraft. It is already known that the use of missiles LRPF will be to prevent conduct by the enemy maneuver operations and air defense.
The basic requirement of the program LRPF is compatibility with existing launchers, including the MLRS M270 and M142 HIMARS, whereby in one container are starting to find "at least two" rockets. This means you can fire up to four rounds of the tracked MLRS launcher or two of HIMARS. At the same time LRPF must comply with the policy of the Department of Defense, which seriously limits the use of cluster munitions, currently serving for destruction purposes area, as well as the safety criteria related to the use of materials less sensitive.

Missiles MLRS / GMLRS and ATACMS are in fact now feature alongside heads odłamkowo-high explosive (Unitary), also heads cassette, effective for the purpose of surface shocks, used successfully during Operation Desert Storm. Their use, however, involves the risk of leaving unexploded ordnance, threaten the civilian population. Lockheed Martin has already developed a missile with a head GMLRS Alternative Warhead (created in collaboration with Orbital ATK) and has been sent to manufacturing. A similar solution for ATACMS is planned for the moment the rocket heads blade to be rebuilt on missiles with warheads odłamkowo-burzącymi.
Long Range Precision Fires is therefore used inter alia to the destruction of the enemy artillery positions, command points, or stations air defense systems. The US military has carried out a process of analysis of alternatives associated with the program LRPF. For fiscal year 2020 is to be carried out the first stage of the work associated with reduced risk and development of technology.
It is expected that the contract in this respect will be given to two or more entities, and only then will select the final proposal of the contractor program Long Range Precision Fires. While the transition from research and development of manufacturing capabilities to produce a set of serial and commencement of deliveries is expected in fiscal year 2024. The first funds related to the development of subsystems for LRPF, in particular motor and warhead meet the requirements for the use of materials less sensitive - for the amount of more than $ 17 million, however, were already granted in the approved budget for 2016.
As is clear from the presentation provided by Col. Gary Stephens, Project Manager, Precision Fires Rocket and Missile Systems US Army, the new missile is to be built using existing technology in the drive head (probably Technology Alternative Warhead) and guidance system, based on INS / GPS. It will, however, had the new control computer. While the head is to have a weight of about 200 pounds (over 91 kg).
The program will be attended probably among other companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, which at a later stage will compete for its implementation. Raytheon revealed recently that offered new missile will be characterized by range of 500 km, which forms the boundary defined by the INF treaty, which prohibits the use of cruise missiles and ballistic medium-range homing land.
Representatives of the group also declare that the proposed LRPF they will be cheaper than currently used tactical missiles, it is also characterized by greater speed and accuracy. With the development of technology to be used with existing missiles such as anti-SM-6 and SM-3.
Work on Long Range Precision Fires also leads Lockheed Martin. The company stresses that supports missile systems US Army-class ground-to-ground (including ATACMS) for over 30 years. It offers, for LRPF, was made through the Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC). It is very likely that the initial stages of work will be executed on the basis of contracts awarded by the Department of Defense by several contractors, and the choice of the final contractor will be made in a few years.
Program Long Range Precision Fires is proof that the United States continues to seek to modernize and increase the capacity owned artillery systems, including the MLRS / HIMARS. Its implementation can help to increase the firepower of artillery sub-units of the US Army, and perhaps also extend the range of any ground-ground missiles to 500 km, which is the border of the permissible INF Treaty. It is very important that the number of sub-units of the US Army rocket artillery, as well as other allied states, decreased significantly over the last several years.

At the same time, as indicated by the experts, under the conditions of a collective defense operation using air support of ground troops would be possible in a much lesser extent than the stabilization due to the use by a potential enemy strategies antydostępowej - A2 / AD. It should also be noted that the conduct of preliminary conceptual work to implement the missile for the produc take about 10 years. This shows what should be the planning horizon of development work on weapons systems, if we expect to implement it to the service.
The artillery HIMARS is taken into account in the proceedings on the Polish program artillery rocket lobster. At this stage offer includes missiles GMLRS and ATACMS, as they are currently used in the system. In the event of choice for HIMARS Lobster would be desirable to include in the system it is also a new generation of tactical missiles, resulting in the program LRPF. In contrast, transfer of technology would be a significant opportunity for the Polish defense industry. Note, however, that the production of missiles will begin after 2020.
