Yeah, they used armored D9s back in Intifada 1 to bury terrorists-they just hadn’t invented the term “sir lachatz” yet. Once on a vacation in Eilat back in 98-99, I met a newly-released guy who was working as a jeep driver that told me an amazing story from his army service as a D9 commander.
As best as I can remember, the story goes like this:
A “heavy” wanted terrorist was holed up in a house, surrounded by soldiers (in Hebron I think) after shooting many LAW rockets at it with not much effect, they called in his D9. The house was on a hill so there was a height difference between the house and street. As the D9 was knocking a hole in one wall, the terrorist suddenly jumps out of the hole and onto the top of the dozer blade. The terrorist pointed his AK gun right at his face and emptied a full AK magazine into the armored glass of the D9. Luckily the bullets didn’t penetrate. After the initial shock, the soldier tried to go to the MAG on top but knocked his head on it. Luckily the driver, put the D9 in reverse and the terrorist, knocked off –balance, falls off the blade. I don’t recall if the terrorist died from the fall, was shot or was buried by the D9 going forward, but this story had a happy ending-for us.
