Just a correction: The British Army, traditionally, had three types of cavalry. Heavy Cavalry,, usually armed with sabers, light cavalry, often in the form of lancers, and dragoons, who were mounted infantry. During the Boer War, Mounted Yeomanry (infantry) overtook the others. The Australians were the 4th Light Horse Brigade, effectively, Mounted Infantry. They arrived at the battle on horse, but fought on foot (as they did in Beersheva, subsequent to the charge). Pure cavalry would never even have conceived of fighting on two feet.
