The Pentagon will deploy the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor combat aircraft to Europe as part of the "European Reassurance Initiative" that seeks to assuage US allies' concerns about Russian activity in the Ukraine, the US Air Force's (USAF's) senior civilian leader said during a 24 August Pentagon briefing.
"Today we are announcing that we will very soon deploy F-22s to Europe to support combatant commander requirements and as part of the European Reassurance Initiative," said Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James. She added that the USAF "cannot disclose exact days and locations of the deployment" for operational security reasons.
In June the Pentagon began deploying aircraft to Europe on a rotational basis under the initiative. James said the F-22s would be part of that effort.
"Russia's military activity in the Ukraine continues to be of great concern to us and to our European allies," she said. "Rotational forces and training exercises help us to maintain our strong and balanced approach. For the air force, an F-22 deployment is certainly on the strong side of the line." She added that the F-22s will train with unspecified allies.
The USAF in June began its European Reassurance Initiative efforts with the temporary deployment of three Boeing B-52H Stratofortress and two Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit bombers to the United Kingdom and eight Fairchild-Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II attack aircraft to Estonia.
The USAF has also announced this month that 12 more A-10s from the 23rd Wing will deploy from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, to Europe as part of a Theater Security Package in support of NATO's 'Operation Atlantic Resolve'. The alliance introduced Operation Atlantic Resolve immediately following the Ukraine crisis in order to reassure eastern European members.
