CHAMP - The silent missile that can destroy enemy electronics with microwave PULSES

http://world-defense.com/threads/th...ve-pulses.2221/

http://www.boeing.com/features/2012...p-10-22-12.page

Now, as CHAMP is nearing operational form, it needs a proper platform that can deploy it against the enemy. Although the CALCM is a proven weapon, and converting older AGM-86s over to CHAMP makes sense in the interim, it is an old missile and not nearly as capable or survivable as modern stealthy cruise missiles such as Lockheed’s Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, or JASSM. JASSM-ER (for Extended Range) is a logical platform for CHAMP as it can be launched by both bombers and fighters, and is a proven design that is already being evolved into a highly advanced anti-ship missile, the Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile, or LRASM. Also, it is smart and stealthy, able to actively detect threatening radars and evade or attack them, making it survivable against the world’s most capable air defense systems.

The ER model also offers double the range as the older AGM-158 JASSM model (about 550 miles), and this may even end up being extended further as the CHAMP equipped JASSM-ER will need no terminal homing sensor or warhead at all, which could make space for more fuel. Once integrated into JASSM-ER, CHAMP will be a ‘first day of war’ standoff weapon that can be launched outside an enemy’s area-denial/anti-access capabilities, and fly a route over known C4SI facilities, zapping them along its way, before destroying itself at the end of its mission. Because of its stealth design, long-range and is expendable, it will fly where no other assets could and because it does not blow anything up, its use does not necessarily give away the fact that the enemy is under direct attack in the first place. In that sense, it is a psychological weapon, capable of at least partially blinding an enemy before they even know that a larger-scale attack is coming.

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...-export-414130/

The 227kg (500lb) BLU-129/B was originally produced by Aerojet Rocketdyne as a quick reaction capability for the war in Afghanistan as a way of reducing civilian deaths by using a cabon-fibre-wound composite shell casing to limit the blast radius. Its development followed one particularly disastrous airstrike on a wedding party in 2008 that killed dozens of women and children along with a number of Taliban insurgents.

The bomb entered service in 2011, and an initial production run of up to 800 units ended earlier this year. Now, the US Air Force says it is interested in restarting production for both domestic and international consumption, with the government approving exports to any nation that already purchases joint direct attack munition (JDAM) guidance assemblies.

“The BLU-129/B continues to be an operational success story in multiple theatres of operation, providing a very low collateral damage weapon to reduce unintended fratricide,” says Jasmine Porterfield, a spokeswoman for the air force armament directorate at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. “The carbon fibre enables the BLU-129/B to achieve three-times less collateral damage compared to a steel-cased MK-82 warhead, and the tungsten-laden case high explosive has a higher near-field lethality. Actual numbers are classified.”

The programme office is currently looking at potential vendors to build the bomb casings, since the initial selection of Aerojet Rocketdyne bypassed normal acquisition procedures due to the urgent operational need. The service anticipates a production rate of 100 to 400 empty bomb casings per year for five years. Those casings would be delivered to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant in Oklahoma to be filled with explosives.

Porterfield notes that the air force is still considering its total inventory requirement, and the most appropriate acquisition strategy. The request for information will determine whether enough potential manufacturers exist to hold a competition.

Northrop Grumman OpenPod

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...15-irst-413022/

http://www.northropgrumman.com/Capa...es/default.aspx

http://www.defensenews.com/story/de...opter/28349109/

Northrop Grumman has responded to US Air Force interest in an infrared search and track (IRST) capability for its F-15C Eagle by unveiling OpenPod, a reconfigurable sensor pod which the company says is already being flight tested on a tactical military aircraft. Northrop’s system would employ an IRST produced by Italy’s Selex ES, owned by Finmeccanica.

The front end of the rail-mounted pod can be swapped out between sorties to host either an IRST, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), targeting, or communications payload.

James Mocarski, Northrop’s vice president of airborne tactical sensors, says OpenPod is the company’s answer to an unspecified air force sources-sought notice for an IRST system. It could also host the air force’s planned Maps System, a capability that will allow F-22s and F-35s to exchange tactical information with legacy fighters, he says.

“OpenPod IRST combines state-of-the-art IRST sensor system technology from our partner Selex ES with the latest advances in target identification, clutter rejection and tracking from Northrop Grumman’s F-35 distributed aperture system, fire control radar, and infrared countermeasures products,” Mocarski said at the June 2 unveiling in Washington DC. “It’s our intended entry into an upcoming air force competition for infrared search and track.”

The air force’s F-15 division has formally expressed interest in a production-ready IRST capability for fielding in 2018, and in a longer-term development effort that would acquire a more advanced system in the 2020 time frame. The sensor would allow legacy, fourth-generation aircraft to “detect, track, target, and engage threats in radar denied environments.”

Meanwhile, the air force research laboratory is exploring next-generation IRST technologies with a programme to mature and demonstrate advanced, long-range offensive infrared search and track capabilities.

Northrop’s OpenPod would will compete against Lockheed Martin’s Legion Pod, unveiled in February. Legion Pod is a derivative of the company’s IRST21 sensor for the US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet.

Lockheed intends to qualify the Legion Pod on the F-15 and F-16 with test flights planned this spring and into 2016. Mocarski declined to name any specific aircraft type for Northrop's product, but the F-16 and F-15 would be ideal candidates.

“It’s in flight testing today and we’re meeting our technical milestones, we’re meeting our schedule milestones, and we’re meeting our cost objectives,” he says. “I can’t go into details, but we are on contract and investing our own collaborative resources as well into integration on a variety of military platforms.

“We believe that there’s a growing requirement for infrared search and track across the entire industry and around the world. Our offering would be available to any upcoming competitions, but this is the first.”

Northrop says OpenPod could host new targeting pod capabilities through the company’s long-standing relationship with Israel’s Rafael on the development and sale Litening G4. Rafael’s latest Litening design is due to become operational next year.

“The OpenPod is an upgrade path we have for Litening,” Mocarski says. “We remain committed to Litening as a product, we remain committed to our partnership with Rafael. It’s been a long-lasting relationship and we see this as the next step in Lightning development. It offers a lot of opportunities to continue to evolve and improve that product with even better capability and higher-performance sensors.”

OpenPod weighs 500lb and is designed to Northrop’s open architect standards. Host platforms could include bombers, unmanned aerial vehicles or even cargo aircraft like the Lockheed C-130 and Boeing C-17.

Lockheed Legion Pod

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...on-f-16-414176/

http://lockheedmartin.com/us/products/legion-pod.html

http://lockheedmartin.com/us/produc...nfographic.html

Lockheed Martin has flight tested its new Legion Pod infrared search-and-track system for the first time on its F-16 Fighting Falcon in Fort Worth, Texas, as the US Air Force explores upgrades to make its legacy fighters more competitive against modern airborne threats.

The pod carries the Lockheed IRST21 sensor, which traces its lineage back to the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and is now in operation on the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet and international F-15 platforms.

Legion Pod is aimed at a USAF programme to provide the F-15C Eagle with a passive, long-range infrared sensor capability, and the service is also exploring options for its Lockheed F-16s.

“Legion Pod was integrated on to the F-16 without making any hardware or software changes to the aircraft,” Lockheed said in a 30 June statement. “Additional flight tests on the F-16 and F-15C will continue throughout the year.”

Paul Lemmo, vice-president of fire control at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, describes the Legion Pod, which was unveiled by the company in February, as a “production-ready, multi-sensor system” derived from hardware that is already in production with an established logistics tail.

The first Legion Pod flight follows Northrop Grumman’s announcement in June that it had partnered with Selex ES to offer a podded IRST system called OpenPod to the air force.

OpenPod is also in flight testing and will be available on the domestic and international market, according to James Mocarski, Northrop’s vice-president of airborne tactical sensors. “Our offering would be available to any upcoming competitions, but this is the first,” he said on 2 June.

The air force has a renewed interest in IRST systems, since its legacy fighters will remain in service for far longer than originally planned and need survivability upgrades. IRST allows an aircraft to detect the heat signature of airborne threats without having to use radar.

The modular design enable users to stockpile missile components rather than complete missiles, thus optimizing logistics, enable rapid evolution of rapidly changing elements such as electronics and electro-optics, while keeping other elements, such as propulsion units and energetically last through their expected shelf life.

NNSA Has a New Approach to Managing the B61-12 Life Extension, but a Constrained Sche
F-15E carrying B61 JTA mock nuclear bombs"

http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-16-218

The B61-12 life extension program's (LEP) managers have developed a management approach that officials from the Department of Energy's (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Department of Defense (DOD) regard as improved over the management approach used for past LEPs, which experienced schedule delays and cost overruns. Among other things, the B61-12 LEP is the first LEP to use earned value management, a tool that measures the planned versus actual value of work accomplished in a given period, which may help NNSA ensure that work progresses on budget and on schedule. It is also the first LEP to integrate the schedules and cost estimates for activities at all participating NNSA sites. NNSA used this new approach to inform its first Program Execution Guide for defense programs, issued in August 2014, which applies to all NNSA defense programs. NNSA's new management approach notwithstanding, the B61-12 LEP faces ongoing management challenges in some areas, including staff shortfalls and an earned value management system that has yet to be tested. The new management approach may help the LEP address these potential challenges, but it is too soon to determine whether this will be the case.

To manage risks in the B61-12 LEP, NNSA and the Air Force use a risk management database and integrated schedules to categorize risks and incorporate risk management steps in the schedules. According to NNSA and Air Force officials, some risks have already been managed in this manner. For example, NNSA estimates that making a needed material procurement in advance prevented a potential delay of more than a year and a potential cost increase of more than $2 million. Remaining risks include the risk that components may fail in certain flight environments and risks related to testing of certain nonnuclear components. NNSA is also working to ensure future compatibility with the F-35 aircraft. NNSA and Air Force officials said they will not know for several years whether steps planned to manage these risks are adequate. A constrained development and production schedule—which DOE's and DOD's Nuclear Weapons Council characterized as having “little, if any, margin left”—complicates efforts to manage risks. Factors constraining the schedule include the aging of components in current versions of the B61, delays in starting the B61-12 LEP because of a lengthy design study, the effects of sequestration, and the need to complete the B61-12 LEP so that NNSA can begin other planned LEPs. GAO will continue to monitor these issues as it assesses the LEP in later stages.

Weapons in the U.S. nuclear stockpile are aging. NNSA and DOD undertake LEPs to refurbish or replace nuclear weapons' aging components. In 2010, they began an LEP to consolidate four versions of a legacy nuclear weapon, the B61 bomb, into a bomb called the B61-12 (see fig.). NNSA and DOD have stated they must complete this LEP by 2024 to uphold U.S. commitments to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As of September 2015, NNSA and DOD estimated that the B61-12 LEP would cost about $8.9 billion.

Iran unveils Toophan-3 anti-tank guided weapon at Baghdad arms expo

http://armamentresearch.com/iran-un...hdad-arms-expo/

Iraq kicked off the 5th Defense, Security, & Aviation Fair in Baghdad this Sunday, with participating representatives from 108 countries, perhaps the most notable of which was Iran. According to a video issued by Iran’s state broadcasting company (IRIB), Tehran is now marketing a new top-attack version of its Toophan (‘typhoon&#8217 anti-tank guided missile. The Toophan series are derived from the US BGM-71 TOW series of anti-tank guided weapons (ATGW). Iran’s presence marks the country’s return to the licit arms market, while also belying the previous illicit transfers of similar missiles to Iraq and elsewhere in the region. ARES has previously reported on Toophan systems intercepted en route to the Gulf of Aden in September 2015. Toophan missiles have also been documented by ARES in service with pro-government, predominantly Shi’a militias in both Syria and Iraq.

The Toophan-3 (T3) is the most recent addition to the family of anti-tank missiles that grew out of licensed TOW production in the 1970s. The family includes the Toophan-1 (a licensed copy of the BGM-71A), Toophan-2 (a BGM-71C derivative), and at least two other variants designated the Toophan-5 and Qaem, which have no direct TOW counterparts.
