RTI produced a series of “secret developments” for Russian Space Forces

Amongst the traditional participants of the International Air Show MAKS is the Russian Concern “Radio Technical Engineering and Information Systems’ (RTI).

Sergey Boev, General Director of the RTI, in an interview with RIA Novosti’s correspondents Katerina Zgirovskaya and Alexander Newar, elaborated on the company’s plans for the MAKS-2015, and prospects of development in connection with the creation in Russia of a new type of forces — the Aerospace Forces.

“Basically, we shall exhibit innovations that have been developed for the needs of the Defense Ministry of Russia — these include the on-board systems developed by us for UAV’s — the unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as our traditional products — the horizontal radar station with surface wave propagation — “Podsolnukh-E” (Sunflower), the “Vitim” radar, the multifunctional radar with an increased range of detection. Together with Rosoboronexport, we plan to hold talks with representatives from Iran, Kazakhstan, Eritrea, India, China and other countries, as well as with the Vietnamese company VietTel. These meetings have already been arranged,” he said.

Mikheev: there are no problems of import substitution while producing military helicopters

Rosoboronexport book of orders exceeds $40 billion

The Rosoboronexport book of orders exceeds $40 billion, including $18 billion orders for military aircraft, Rosoboronexport General Director Anatoly Isaikin told reporters on August 25.

“The Rosoboronexport book of orders tops $40 billion, and the 2015 plan is being fulfilled on schedule. We have absolutely no doubts that it will be met,” Isaikin said at the MAKS 2015 international aerospace show.

He added that the Rosoboronexport book of orders for Russian aircraft “exceeded $18 billion.”

Rosoboronexport is energetically prompting brand new multirole fighters Sukhoi Su-35 and Mikoyan MiG-29M/M2, military transport aircraft Ilyushin Il-76MD-91A and combat trainers Yakovlev Yak-130, Isaikin said.

Technologies for drones will be presented by the Russian company “Tiber”

A new high-speed UAV, which does not require an airfield, will be presented at MAKS airshow

Kronshtadt Group to present a high-speed UAV designed for operation in the regions, which have no airfield infrastructure, at MAKS-2015 international airshow, RIA Novosti reports.

A new next-generation UAV, which does not need an airfield, will be showcased at MAKS-2015 international airshow held in Zhukovsky (Moscow Region) during a period from August 25th to August 30th, press-service of Kronshtadt Group reports.

This will be the first presentation of Fregat UAV ever. “The UAV is designed for carrying out missions in the area of aerial reconnaissance, cargo transportation and aviation works performed in regions having no airfield infrastructure,” the company added.

Kronshtadt Group comprises a number of Russia’s leading enterprises specializing in development and production of high-tech products for the Russian market. Kronshtadt Group was established following the restructuring of Transas’ business aimed at development of separate brands in different areas of activities: products and solutions for aircraft industry, defense products and solutions, as well as products related to security and professional training.

Irkut Corporation and Sberbank Leasing are going to sign a firm contract for delivery of 20 MS-21 aircraft at MAKS-2015 airshow

Sberbank Leasing and Irkut Corporation are going to sign a firm contract for delivery of 20 MS-21 aircraft at MAKS-2015 international airshow, a source close to Irkut Corporation reports. He added that the contract might also include an option for another 30 jets of the type.


“It is too early to talk about details, but Sberbank Leasing and Irkut Corporation are going to sign a firm contract for delivery of 20 MS-21 aircraft. Moreover, the contract may include the option for 30 more jets of the type,” the source told Aviation EXplorer.


A letter of intent for delivery of 20 MS-21 airliners was signed by Irkut Corporation and Sberbank Leasing at MAKS-2013. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled for 2019-2025 period. At that time the list price of 20 jets of the type was $1,7 billion.

Almaz-Antei to present 20 models of weapons at MAKS-2015

“Kuznetsov” to present liquid rocket engine NK-39 for the first time at the MAKS-2015

Irkut Corporation demonstrated for the first time at the MAKS 2015 air show its Yak-130 'Mitten' trainer/strike aircraft fitted with a nose-mounted laser rangefinder.

An Irkut representative stated that "the laser rangefinder enables using the Yak-130 over a very irregular terrain [mountains, ravines], improves the accuracy of target co-ordinate determination and that of the existing range of weapons".

The laser rangefinder has been fitted onto the Yak-130 in compliance with a foreign customer's requirements to improve the aircraft's strike capabilities.

"By now the upgraded Yak-130 has undergone aerodynamic trials and the new laser rangefinder has been tested for range and aiming precision," a Russian defence industry source told IHS Jane's . The source confirmed that weapons tests will also be conducted on the upgraded Yak-130.

The upgraded Yak-130 is also fitted with the Talisman electronic warfare suite developed by Belarussian company Defence Initiatives. However, the suite has not yet been tested on the Yak-130.

At the MAKS-2015 air show, Irkut Corporation also formally signed a previously revealed contract to supply a second batch of four Yak-130s to Belarus. The aircraft will be delivered in 2016.

MAKS 2015: Russia’s new Ka-35 AEW helicopter enters service

Russia’s latest Kamov Ka-35 airborne early warning (AEW) helicopter has entered service with the Russian Navy, an industry source told IHS Jane’s at the MAKS-2015 air show.

The new Ka-35 is both designed as a replacement for the Russian Navy’s ageing Ka-31 ‘Helix’ AEW helicopters and to have a wider capability set than the older platform. “This is a relatively old machine” the source stated of the Ka-31, adding: “It was created in its time for fulfilling, in particular, such missions as protecting Project 1143 vessels [Kiev-class aircraft carriers], and it did the job well.”

The new AEW helicopter has built on the legacy of the older aircraft, the source stated.

MAKS 2015: KRTV unveils Grom-E1/E2 stand-off munitions

Both are currently being trialled according to the director general of KTRV, Boris Obnosov.

The munitions have a unified design configuration with swept-back wings and have been designed to fit within a fighter aircraft’s internal weapon bay. Both also feature the same combined (INS/GLONASS) guidance system, and differ in that while the powered Grom-E1 missile is equipped with a rocket engine at its rear, the gliding Grom-E2 uses this space for an additional high-explosive warhead instead of the engine.

Although the precise specifications were withheld, KRTV noted that each weapon weighs over 600 kg. The Grom-E1 has a roughly 300 kg warhead, while the Grom-E2s weigh more than 450 kg. The range of the munitions was not disclosed, but both are intended to be stand-off weapons, capable of engaging land targets outside of defended airspace.

Irkut Corporation (part of United Aircraft Corporation) demonstrates Yak-130 operational trainer fitted with laser rangefinder at the static display of MAKS-2015 international airshow for the first time ever.

The rangefinder is intended for visual identification of ground and surface targets by the crew, and measurement of slant distance to them, the corporation reported.

“Yak-130 (tail number 01) was upgraded by Yakovlev design bureau (part of Irkut Corporation) in accordance with the requirements of foreign customers; the upgrade is focused on increasing the jet’s combat effectiveness (Yak-130 may be used as a light attack aircraft).

The laser rangefinder allows operating Yak-130 jets in mountainous regions with ravines, improves the accuracy in the area of target location and usage of weapons,” Irkut Corporation noted.

Russia to deliver Tor-M2K missile launchers to Belarus

According to Rosoboronexport’s General Director Anatoly Isaykin, the delivery of these launchers will significantly boost air defense capability of Belarus and the Russia-Belarus Union State in general.

“The delivery is scheduled for 2016,” Isaykin told reporters at the MAKS-2015 air show.

Tor-M is an advanced short-range surface-to-air missile system, designed to defend key military and civilian facilities from attacks by aircraft, cruise and guided missiles, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles.

Russia's Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopters will receive the N025 mast-mounted radar from 2016, an industry source told IHS Jane's at MAKS 2015.

"The military is completing the tests of the N025 radar on three helicopters. Starting next year, it will be produced serially for mounting on new Mi-28N helicopters," the expert said.

According to him the Russian military's existing Mi-28Ns can be fitted with the radar during repair and upgrade. The Mi-28N helicopters began to enter service with the Russian army in 2008.

At present a simplified N025E version is installed on the Mi-28NE export version of the helicopter.

MOSCOW – Three new or derivative weapons were unveiled at the MAKS show last week by Tactical Missiles Corporation (TMC), all designed specifically to fit the internal weapon bays of the Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter.

The T-50 has two large tandem centerline bays for medium-to-large weapons and two outboard bays for short-range air-to-air missiles.

TMC’s Grom (Thunder) air-to-surface weapon is all-new, featuring sharp-edged folding swept wings and folding tails. So far, two versions have been identified: Grom-1, with a rocket engine, and the gliding Grom-2 with a larger warhead. The initial versions use satellite-inertial guidance, but it is likely that future models will incorporate precision guidance; the mock-ups shown at MAKS – including one under a MiG-29 on static display – appeared to have dielectric nose radomes, suggesting an anti-radar role. Weight and range details were not disclosed.

The Kh-59MK2 cruise missile bears little external resemblance to the earlier Kh-59 (AS-18 Kazoo), which is a conventional glide bomb with an externally mounted Saturn 36MT turbofan engine, but uses the same powerplant, warhead and guidance system. It has a redesigned airframe to reduce its radar signature and fit in the Sukhoi T-50’s weapon bays. The 1,700-lb. weapon has a design range of up to 160 nm.

The Kh-59MK2 features a stealth-contoured nose with short, swept horizontal chines, which avoids a radar cross-section (RCS) spike from a rounded nose but takes up less space in the length-limited (4.2-meter-long) T-50 bays than a pointed or wedge nose. Flat sides result in strong RCS spikes at 90-deg. to the missile’s axis, but if the weapon is at low altitude these are not exploitable by an airborne radar, because a radar at that position cannot detect any Doppler signal from the missile. The flush inlet is located under the body.

A third, modified weapon was the Kh-58UShKE-IIR (imaging infrared). The basic Kh-58UShKE, seen at previous MAKS shows, is a modernized, shortened, folding-wing version of the veteran Mach 4 Kh-58 (AS-11 Kilter). The new model adds two IIR sensors under the forebody, allowing the weapon to engage emitters that have been shut down.

The new weapons underscore the fact that the T-50 cannot be regarded as an analog to the Lockheed Martin F-22. It is designed for both air-to-air and air-to-surface missions, with the ability to carry four large weapons internally (versus two 1,000-lb. bombs on the F-22) as well as having provision for Kh-31 anti-radar missiles under the wings.

A subsidiary of Russia's state technology corporation Rostec has unveiled the first photo of the Chirok, an amphibious reconnaissance and strike UAV outfitted with an air cushion, ahead of the MAKS-2015 international air show slated to be held near Moscow in late August.

The hardware could be operated in both manned and unpiloted modes. The multipurpose UAV is meant for conducting reconnaissance, monitoring and freight missions, including transporting people to remote areas. The military could fit it with missiles, rockets or bombs to use as a combat vehicle.

The Chirok (Teal), manufactured by the United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC), has a maxim range of 1550 miles and could reach an altitude of nearly 20,000 feet. It has a maximum effective payload of 300 kilograms.

The drone is made out of composite materials which make it hard to detect the aircraft. "In addition, the UAV equipped with a reciprocating engine with controllable-pitch propellers is almost noiseless," the UIMC explained.

Developed by the Moscow Radio Engineering Research Institute, the air cushion design allows the Chirok to take off and land in virtually any conditions – from uneven surfaces, to sand or snow-covered and wetland territories, to water surfaces. The air cushion is retractable during flight.

The Chirok prototype was unveiled in mid-2014. In early 2015, the UIMC announced that two full-sized drones were ready for tests.
