http://www.idf.il/1528-12873-he/Dover.aspx

The Daya Unit - an article

Hello, The following text was written by tamido and myself.
The article describes the unit structure, equipment and bits and pieces.
Enjoy.
Discussion and complaints are wellcome.
Oh and before anyone asks - the article passed the censor.

The Unit
The unit ”Daya” (Black Kite) was a light mobile combat field intelligence unit formed in 1989 by the Artillery Corps at the outbreak of the first Intifada, when counter insurgency was deployed by the IDF to the mounting armed resistance by the Palestinians.
In parallel to the formation of Daya a designated unit was formed at 869 with similar missions and goals. The main mission of Daya was to provide intelligence surveillance at the occupied territories, specifically for the apprehension of insurgents.

The unit comprised of app. 60 personnel, and was under the direct command of the 215 Artillery Brigade. The unit was divided into teams of four soldiers led by an NCO, and two teams were placed at each of the 6 regional Brigades (HATMAR) in the West Bank and acted virtually as the organic field intelligence gathering unit of the sector.

At the unit’s inception, the unit’s soldiers were recruited and handpicked directly after Artillery school (16-17 weeks post conscription). The soldiers then passed a gruesome 7 week combat surveillance course that included two weeks of advanced infantry training at BAP-LACHISH, one week of intelligence school at Glilot and a tough 4 week combat surveillance and navigation training at the Intelligence and Reconnaissance School (MOS) in BALISH (Tze’elim).

After completing the surveillance course the new soldiers then remained at the unit for two recruitment cycles in teams designated as “greens” before either advancing to NCO school or remaining an additional one to two cycles before being shipped out to the regular artillery regiments. This custom ceased at 1993 when it was realized that the unit loses its special expertise and knowhow with the rapid transfer-out of its soldiers, and since the Artillery Corps moved to Solela Mahzorit model at that year which ascribed recruits to the regular artillery regiments from basic training course, thereby exhausting the option of the unit to recruit fresh conscripts out of Artillery School.

As far as the 215 Brigade was concerned Daya was an orphan child. As being an independent unit at the Brigade but with no artillery specific missions and with 215 having no control over its activity the unit had no mother and father at the Brigade to take care of it.

That meant that the 215 Brigade supplied Daya’s manpower, the training, personal weapons (identical to the ones given at the Battalions, as this is what they had in their armory) and 2nd grade personal equipment (as the good stuff went to the Battalions and in any case did not fit the needs of the unit). The Brigade supplied no surveillance and specialized equipment and expected the Ayosh Division to supply the teams at every Hatmar with the necessary gear (which was a sensible expectation from 215’s perspective, as the mission of Daya had nothing to do with that of 215 – but that meant that Daya was very poorly equipped to carry out its missions).

This reality made Daya act as a rogue unit, especially in its first years of formation from the understanding that it had to care of itself, on its own, in order to carry out its missions properly. In order to get supplied with the proper gear and ammunition it needed Daya’s personnel raided bases’ (that mostly hosted Daya for training) armory and supply warehouses for specific munition and gear (or as the IDF slang goes – “Hashlamat Ziyud” – gear completion). As this was done almost routinely in all bases eventually this did not go unnoticed and the unit had many “visits” from the military police (especially searching for Tzlamim) - but fortunately evidence was properly concealed and no charges were placed…

To “add crime on punishment”, as the Hebrew saying goes, as an orphan child the Daya teams at the Hatmar were also treated as a read headed step-child. Though the teams were organic to the Hatmar and resided in its premises they had no affiliation to the Hatmar’s manpower. Daya’s ways of working and daily operations contradicted the daily activity of the Hatmar’s personnel (i.e guard duty, latrine duty, kitchen duty, morning wake ups and line ups etc..) which created a lot of frustration and confrontation with the Hatmar’s administration staff (who were not part of the Hatmar’s operational HQ, which was responsible to hand down to Daya its missions), which in turn manifested in the lack of caring and catering to the unit’s administrative needs during its “off hours”. Putting it bluntly, the unit carried out missions and operations at the Hatmar’s sector, when off-duty the unit’s members were on call. This collided with the stark contradiction that all the Hatmar personnel and missions, could have been termed at best as combat support, and hence the administrative staff could not comprehend why Daya were not sharing their routine maintenance duties.

One must compare Daya to its compatriot at the time – 869 unit. 869 at the time was defined as a Matkal unit – meaning that its budget and access to resources were almost endless. It had state of the art equipment and gear of all sorts, plentiful of its own transportation solutions (Abir mini trucks, GMC vans etc&#8230, it was 100% independent from the Hatmar’s needs and Ayosh Division requirements, and its teams resided in the headquarters at Rama (Ramallah). Missions in different sectors were allocated to teams according to 869 decision (i.e no teams dedicated to specific sector). Its soldiers were recruited to the unit from conscription till release from service – i.e good organizational memory and ways of working.

But when comparing the operations of both units Daya compensated its lack of specialized equipment with high motivation, good knowledge of the specific sector and the terrain its teams resided at, very good communication working with the local command chain, and archaic but useful solutions from the Ugda (and in any case 15*80, 25*150 and TAS-6 solved 99% of the mission's requirements – most of the good stuff 869 had were mostly “nice to have” but not essential).

The Daya unit prided itself with numerous successful missions, bringing about the apprehension of many insurgents and helped virtually annihilate the operations of the Black Panther movement in the Jenin sector.

Unit and Team - Personal experience and day to day life
The teams lived in the Hatmar. There was the mother base in Rama (Ramallah), but it was not used for much more than administrations and the occasional exercise.

The unit was based predominantly on the NCOs and team members. The officers visited each team for some days and then moved to the next. Most of the time we did not see them, and even when they were around they did not try to take over. The NCOs did their job well, the soldiers behaved and were expected to assume the same responsibilities and professionalism of their team leader. The teams were very solidified and little or no formality existed in the teams and the entire unit.

The discipline in the artillery battalions was pretty harsh. For example the 403 battalion at the time had a constant contingent of soldiers in prison (more than one soldier). You could get a weekend detention in base for leaving an oil can open or saying the wrong thing to an NCO. Sleeping on guard duty was an automatic 64 days in jail. OTOH 403 trained a LOT and was good at artillery work. Other battalions like 404 were not as bad, but discipline was enforced and distance existed. In Daya a soldier had responsibility, which was an amazing change. Sure we goofed off, but not much. Also, any Daya soldier who came from a battalion knew that he could be kicked out of the unit and sent to back was well motivated to behave.

בתגובה להודעה מספר 18 שנכתבה על ידי Nargila Dwarf שמתחילה ב "The Daya Unit - an article"

I think both units were basically plugging holes. After a while the usual IDF inertia kicked in and everything just continued without thinking.
The holes the units filled were big, and sometimes important. The solution of borrowing from artilelry was half-assed at best.
Not that I'm complaining about the service itself, much better than the 403 btl.

The idea of soldiers serving some months in Daya\Akrab and then going over to the battalions is one of the stupidest things ever. The loss of soldiers experienced in observing and local topography and the price of retraining them for artillery work.

Organising for war, adjusting for peace.

QUOTE]The idea of soldiers..."

First of all thanks.

As Amir wrote the units were created probably without much thought.
I can not speak about Akrab, but Daya did little that is related to artillery.
The units were created in 1989 or so, when the the first intifada was alive and well so there was a need and the artillery could lend soldiers. The training for the unit was well thought out and proper. (I came from a battalion and had a 2 week course in rama).

It is just weird, so there was a need to create such units. The intel side created 869 which worked for intel, don't know much about them.
why continue with the periodical service with daya?
The periodical service was bad for Daya, the artillery battalions and the hatmar's.

As long as the job was done no one cared.
Strange decision making if any.

Here is another example:
Some of the work was done in built areas, like Hebron. We asked to get to learn a bit of urban warfare. Basics like how to enter a house, clear a room.
There was good chance a team would need to respond to some live fire.
We got no training.
Last year on this forum it was posted that the Isuf-Kravi will learn lashab.
Mazal-Tov, even after 20 years.

Wheels:
The only unit vehicle was a white car for the unit commander. The vehicles that were used belonged to the Hatmar: a Nunnun and the intel Jeep/Six when it was not in use.

Below: Nununenu in all it's glory. Just behind - the infamous Jennin refugee camp in better days:

Below: Strike a pose with the sleek, perspex armoured Six. Stones only please! Note at the background the Hatmar’s men’s living quarters. You can see that the open corridor has been sealed up with wood after numerous incidents of direct fire from the Jenin refugee camp which is just opposite the dormitories, only few meters from the fence of the site. Imagine that in one such incident all the Hatmar soldiers lined up against the open corridor ledge and returned fire….

The NunNun was covered in perspex just like the Six, and had enough place for a team and all the required gear. It never had a problem to get off road. The Six had much less space, but was a smooth ride. Just look at that sexy thing!

Once, the Nunnun came to pick us up one evening after folding the outlook position. I looked at it and asked the driver: ”hey D, Is there not something missing here?” And sure enough the sliding roof, about 1.5x1.5 meters of metal and plastic was missing. Where to, nobody knows. It flew away and was not seen again.

Weapons
Galil for the younger guys, glilon for the older ones and NCO's. Short M16 for the officers and some M203s. The weapons were only light ones, no squad machine guns. Some cs grenades were available in the vehicles. The reasons for this were that there was enough to carry as it were, heavier weapons were not part of the job and no training to make them effectively used (Except cannons of course).

Below: This hotshot also had an Eyal scope! Wow, Major league sayeret etc.

Special backpacks for the optics were not supplied, so on-the-spot solutions were used: A stretcher backpack was converted to carry the binoculars – see on the back of the middle guy above.

Below: One guy had the elusive scope attachment for the glilon! Dunno where he got it, and a little funny to have it on a Glilon of all things. But he still 10 points for the look!

The vests (אפודים) were of the same type issued to the infantry at the time. The safety vests (שכפ"ץ ) were of the thin type, no ceramics. Helmets were camo covered like it should be. No black stuff and no fluffy mitznafot.

Optics! The good stuff:
Short about binoculars: Binoculars have two basic metrics for optical evaluation: Magnification(M) and objective diameter(D) in mm. Yeah, sure there are other parameters* but for our business it is enough. Here Bigger is Better! Is the truth with modification: the value D/M gives how bright the resulting image is. Big D/M value is better than small.

Small binoculars are hand operated. Middle size ones are connected to a tripod. Large ones have a tripod and separate forkmount connecting the binoculars tubes to the tripod. Larger binoculars have better image quality than smaller ones but the weight grows quickly.

*Quality of image is dependent also on the glass type and quality used for the lenses Lens polish, quality of mirrors used, lens coating, and probably other stuff.

10x40:

The small binoculars in the image below is a 10x40, the bigger one a 15x80. Wikipedia image.

The 10x40 was the basic observation tool. Small, light and good quality and brightness, even in low light. It was always with the team. D/M = 4.

15x80:

We also had 14x60 (or 13x60, don’t remember)

Above: Ayin Lezion! Looking for a bad man. The 15x80 (D/M=5.3) was the workhorse for close range surveillance, with a magnification large enough for medium-long distances view. The small size and low weight made it easy to carry in a backpack or a standard stretcher/water carrier. see image above of the three crossing the barb wire fence. The tripod was easy to handle as well.

From the Wiki image and the one below it is good to see that it is still used (and probably the same ones).

Better pictures of a more modern version: http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=217

Please take some time to remove small children from the room. Gentle readers beware, some foul language ahead.

Only one, partial picture of the 20x120 and small wonder, it was a GIANT piece of shit! Imagine a 155mm M-109 self propelled Howitzer in binocular form: Grasy, Heavy, big, and hard to move. Full of sharp edges and pointy bits just waiting to punch the ribs or hit the knuckles. As a bonus, although the image quality was good, the bino's was crossed eyed (Pzila). This made it impossible to use for more than a minute before you had to look away. It was easier to use just one eye at the time. The tripod and forkmount were big and heavy pain in the arse as well. I believe the 20x120 was a deep undercover member of the Islamic Jihad, trying its best to attack us when it could.

We avoided it like the plague.

A quick Google image search found no images of the 20x120 used by the Isuf Kravi, so I guess some lessons are learned even in the Israely military. I am sure it is still out there, at some forgotten overwatch in the Jordan valley, in the mountains above Eilat or on the Ramim ridge. Making life hard on some poor, tired, and oh Too-Old-For-This-Shit reservist.

Wow, ranting about military equipment 21 years later! I feel better now.

Lets look at better stuff!

25x150:

Still looking for that man. Note the MK77 radio, which was the usual comms.

Looking a little cold huh? An all weather profession. It was so good to have coffee, warm food and a cigarett.

The 25x150 (D/M= 6) is the absolute opposite of the 20x120 and was the core and essential tool on almot all of the operations. It was big, and heavy too, but less than the 20x120. The image quality was superb and with some moonlight or light around the target it was good by night as well. An extra bonus is that even in very low light, it was possible to see colors, something that night vision gear could not do.

It was hard to move around, but with some shiftzurim the tubes were strapped to a stretcher carrier. The forkmount was carried by hand. The original tripod was massive and heavy, but no worries “לא אלמן ישראל. A piece of wood carved as a pin was used so that the forkmount fit to the tripod of the 15x80. Voila, there was much less to carry – see image above. The only problem was making sure that the tripod was holding on. It was not designed for such weight.

TAS-6:
Was the workhorse for night surveillance as thermic night vision, but it was useful for short-medium ranges only. It had many limitations and we refrained from using it as much as possible.

The Job
N
ot a lot to say really. A team sat in place from one day (and night) to as long as needed. Usually going back to sleep in the Hativa. Sometimes the teams rotated.

At that very place, placed on the “Insurgent trail” near Kabatiya, a local reserve company was tasked with providing a platoon or so for our security. They did sadir in Golani and paratroopers. Talking to them about the area, Kabatya's Hanged man roundabout (A man was hanged there as a Mashtap at the beginning of the first intifada). One of the reservists said (from memory):

“Yeah, I remember that place. We were tironim in Bezeq when the Intifada started, and were sent into Kabatya with batons. He was on an electricity pole, and I took him down. He was hanging there for three days.”

Next: Training exercises.

Training Exercises:
About twice a year the unit came together on a training exercise. Exercises included navigation (Nivutim) mostly in the north, and some in old cities using Tazot. Navigation was pretty great, sadly no pictures.

Sometimes the Hativa had a training exercise. Going on a chopper? Dont mind if we do!

Up close all IAF flying machines look like a 1995 Ford fiesta, but flying was... no words, Freedom.

Simpler, safer days:
The west bank in 89-94 had probably less than tenth of the amount of weapons there is now. Firearms were few and far between, and IED makers were hunted down. Sure, only an idiot would take a stroll through Kabatya or Mesiliya, but on the main roads the danger was mostly throwing stones and fire bombs.

The Image below was taken in an unconcealed outpost on top a local private house in the middle of Jennin, with the Gilboa mountain in the back (the “unconcealed” outpost had an ulterior purpose :
