לגבי ה- C17: קטאר ואיחוד האמירויות מפעילות ביחד 10 מטוסים, יותר ממעצמות תעשיתיות עם מעורבות גלובלית כמו קנדה, בריטניה ואוסטרליה. אני מניח שזו צורה של שותפות במאמץ האמריקאי להגן עליהן, וכן מין רכש-גומלין לסיוע לתעשייה האמריקאית. מעניין האם יש הסכם לשילוב מטוסים אלו במבצעי תובלה אמריקאים לתגבור כוחות במפרץ.

ה RAF מחדש לגמרי בשנים האחרונות את צי התובלה העתיק שלו. קודם כל קלטו שמיניית C-17 (האחרון בינהם במאי 2012) ו 24 קרנף J משני הדגמים. במקביל נקלטים בהדרגה 14 מטוסי VOYAGER המבוססים על האיירבאס 330 ומסוגלים לשאת יותר מטען ונוסעים מה C-17 ובעוד שנתיים מתחיל ה RAF לקלוט 22 מטוסי A400M חדשים, שזכו לאחרונה לשם היומרני "אטלס" (בהחלט מתחרה ראוי לשמשון הישראלי ). כמו כן נותרו להם כמה שרידים מציי ה VC-10 והטרייסטר שהם בגדר מוצגים ארכיונים מעופפים המיועדים להישאר בשירות עד 2016 וביחד עם כמה מטוסי מנהלים מונה צי התובלה והתדלוק של חה"א המלכותי כ 70 מטוסים. לקראת סוף העשור הנוכחי יעמוד לראשותם צי מטוסים מודרני בעל יכולות טקטיות ואסט' מגוונות.

אולי יש מקום למטוס בסגנון ה- C5 או בואינג-747 בתצורת מטען, שיכול לקחת פריטי מטען גדולים אך לא לנחות במנחתים קדמיים? כמה מטיסות ה- C17 אכן מצריכות יכולת הנ"ק (יחסית)?

ולדעתי הם מצטערים שלא רכשו מאות כמותו שעוד יכלו לעשות כן.

Conclusions
Barring unforeseen changes to the C-17A program, production will end in 2014 or 2015. Once C-17A production in Long Beach ceases, any resumption of production would incur sizable costs. Even Table*S.1’s most optimistic C-17A restart case would have at least $2.1*billion in nonrecurring costs. The magnitude of the cost of restarting C-17A production or starting up production of a variant gives pause with respect to tooling retention. One could interpret these sizable cost estimates to suggest the probability of a future production restart is quite small. Without some probability of eventual C-17 restart, there would be no value in retaining C-17 production-only tools.

The estimated cost for up to four C-17As, support and services is $1.609 billion.

On Feb 26, inside Boeing’s Long Beach manufacturing facility, C-17 employees pieced together the nose, center fuselage, wings, and tail for the last time. Plane 279 marks the final, “major join,” of the C-17, and will be the final plane to come off the assembly line. The major join begins early in the morning by towing the four massive pieces to a central location. Crane operators and teams slowly lift and place the pieces in a giant fixture. Then bring them together like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

It’s a bittersweet end for the employees. Some began working on plane number one when the plant first opened. They’re all proud to know their work will live on for decades continuing to support troops and humanitarian efforts around the world. Check out the video to see the last C-17 come together. Boeing, the United States Air Force, and the worldwide fleet of C-17 Globemaster IIIs celebrated the fleet reaching three million flight hours with a ceremonial flight from Robins Air Force base in Georgia to Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina. The flight was marked with celebrations at both bases where Boeing, the Air Force, and guests including those lucky enough to be on the flight, congratulated each other on the incredible accomplishment. “It was fantastic to be up there and just to experience that, and experience the power from that end of the aircraft. It was really wonderful,” said C-17 System Program Director Col. Amanda Myers.

It took 24 years for the C-17 fleet to reach three million. The first flight was in Sept. 1991.
According to the Air Force, three million flight hours is the equivalent of flying around the Earth 55,555 times, 2,948 trips to the moon, or a single C-17 flying nonstop for 342 years.
Boeing has delivered 223 C-17 Globemaster IIIs to the USAF and 44 to its worldwide partners.

That's it. There ain't no more. After 24 years of flight, Boeing stopped making one of the biggest airplanes in the world on Sunday. With aviation enthusiasts cheering and snapping photos, the final C-17 Globemaster III took a victory stroll along a runway at an airport in Long Beach, California, not far from the Boeing factory where workers crafted more than 270 of these amazing machines.
