The fifth, Mudar Khadur, was arrested in Damascus after launching a social media campaign calling for information on the fate of soldiers at bases overrun by militants.
Khadur launched the "Eagles of Tabqa Military Airport" Facebook page to rally support for troops as they came under attack, and then the #Waynun or #WhereAreThey campaign after Tabqa was captured.
The page and campaign included direct criticism of defence minister Freij, with postings referring to him as "Minister of Death" and expressions of anger at his reappointment in late August.
"These men were not opponents of Bashar al-Assad," Abdel Rahman said.
"But they were angered by the lack of explanations about how these well-protected bases could have fallen so quickly and the large number of deaths," he said.
Khadur's arrest was also reported on the "Eagles of Tabqa Military Airport" Facebook page. "Not a traitor, not an agent, not a terrorist," one posting reads. "He was arrested by the air force intelligence on the evening of August 29, 2014 in Damascus."
According to the Observatory, at least 2,366 Syrian soldiers were killed in July and August alone, more than 800 of them in militant attacks, with others still missing.

In the village of Al-Hurra, which is loyal to the regime, local elder Jamal al-Mualla sees little hope for reconciliation. Earlier this summer, a truck packed with nearly 15 tons of explosives concealed under animal feed was parked at the entrance of his farm village. A blast killed 41 people, including many sleeping women and children, he said, and leveled most of the homes.
The simple answer is yes. The civil war has taken a heavy toll on the ground troops and air power of the Syrian Arab Armed Forces (SAAF), but its air defences have remained largely unaffected. While not the most advanced in the world, Syrian anti-air systems still pose a considerable threat.
According to the annual defence report of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Damascus has access to modern Russian platforms. These include the Pantsir-S1, the Strela-10 and the likely culprit in the MH17 tragedy, the Buk/Buk-M2. Despite repeated discussions over the potential deployment of the formidable theatre-level S-300 system, its status in Syrian hands remains ambiguous.
Such weapons were responsible for the downing of a Turkish warplane along the Syrian periphery in 2012, sparking a minor diplomatic crisis. Closer to home and several decades earlier in 1983, the SAAF used similar platforms to down two US Navy aircraft in Lebanese airspace, much to the consternation of the Reagan administration. Last year, Israel had concerns over the deployment of the Buk in southern Syria and its potential transfer to Lebanese Hezbollah. The IDF launched a devastating airstrike near Damascus to destroy the weapons before they could reach their destination.
he Syrian regime couldn’t hope to fend off a direct assault by the US and its partners. However, it could disrupt an operation against IS. This could have severe political consequences and lead to a rapid escalation and regionalisation of the conflict.
Given IS' positioning inside Syria, coalition air strikes will likely be centred on the eastern city of Raqqah, where the group has made a serious effort to establish itself. While SAAF forces have lost considerable ground since 2011, they nevertheless hold territory within 50 kilometres of the city. This counts much of the government arsenal out, but still leaves systems like the Buk as a credible threat to coalition aircraft.
As the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia showed, even the stealthiest of aircraft can be downed by relatively low-grade Russian and Soviet equipment.

Syrian government forces reinforced by fighters from the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah were driven back from areas in Rif Dimashq outside Damascus on Sunday, after an attempt to seize the area from opposition and Islamist forces failed, sources have told Asharq Al-Awsat.
Syrian opposition sources said government forces launched an attack on the Dokhania area northeast of Damascus, “in the morning [on Sunday] with the participation of fighters from Lebanese Hezbollah,” adding that the attack, which aimed to take back the area, was repulsed.
Other sources said the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front group had “sent reinforcements to the area,” where it succeeded in driving back government forces, and “launched a counter-attack against them which freed up the forces of the Islamic Front and the Free Syrian Army in the area.”

ISIS fighters entered the besieged Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani, a Kurdish fighter said Friday, setting the stage for a vicious street-to-street battle in the shadow of Turkey's border. Alan Minbic, a fighter with the Kurdish People's Protection Unit, or YPG, told CNN that ISIS now controls the southwest corner of the city, known in Arabic as Ayn al-Arab.
However, there were conflicting reports. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group, said it did not believe that ISIS was in the city itself based on information from more than a dozen sources in Kobani.

But a look at the city shows why it would mark an important strategic victory for the militants. ISIS would control a complete swath of land between its self-declared capital of Raqqa, Syria, and Turkey -- a stretch of more than 100 kilometers (62 miles).
Turkey is in a tough spot. It has ISIS militants threatening the Syrian border town of Kobani, inching ever closer to confronting Turkish security forces. In addition thousands of Syrian Kurds, fleeing ISIS attacks, have massed along its border, adding further to Ankara's troubles. Amid mounting pressure to become more active in the U.S.-led international coalition against ISIS, the Turkish parliament last week overwhelmingly authorized its military to make incursions into Syria and Iraq; also to allow foreign troops to operate out of Turkish bases. The move has been greeted in Western capitals as a welcome sign that Turkey is finally fully on board with the anti-ISIS coalition.
Yet the Turkish parliament's actions herald neither a complete about-face in policy toward Syria nor immediate military action against ISIS. Indeed, Turkey's reasons for joining the war may be more to do with suppressing Kurdish separatists and removing the al-Assad regime than with destroying the jihadist group. Toppling the leadership in Damascus and keeping in check the Syrian Kurds who are closely linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, have long been Ankara's priorities in Syria. The wording of last week's parliamentary resolution -- which states that "the terrorist elements of the outlawed PKK still exist in northern Iraq" -- suggests that Kurdish separatists still remain the Turkish government's top concern.
Turkey thinks that Assad regime's ability to attack mainstream opposition forces from the air has strengthened ISIS, causing the Free Syrian Army to flee and allowing the Islamic militants to capture the vacant territory. Enforcing a no-fly zone over Syria would ground al-Assad's air force and boost rebels fighting to topple him: it could also establish a Turkish military presence, ridding northern Syria of Kurdish fighters linked to the PKK and smothering the autonomous Kurdish region. Turkey has become increasingly uneasy about the emergence of yet another Kurdish entity on its frontier after the PKK-affiliated Syrian Kurdish groups established autonomy in northern Syria.
The military and diplomatic boost that the PKK has received through its effective fight against ISIS has also worsened the situation for Ankara. In response to the growing ISIS threat, the PKK, the Peshmerga, and the People's Protection Unit (the PKK-linked Kurdish militia group fighting in Syria), have established a united Kurdish front, with the PKK militants coming to the aid of Peshmerga fighters and halting the jihadi group's advance into the autonomous region of northern Iraq. The People's Protection Unit was the main force battling ISIS, and it helped thousands of Yazidis escape from the western part of the region as ISIS attacked.
The PKK has effectively become the West's best hope for on-the-ground troops, winning the group positive reviews in Western media. Since the group started its assault against ISIS in northern Iraq, there has been a lot of talk in Western capitals about removing the PKK from the terror list. The fight against ISIS has also empowered the PKK militarily: Turkey is concerned that that weapons sent to the Peshmerga might ultimately end up in the hands of the PKK at a time when Ankara is moving forward with a deal that would disarm its group. The Turkish government puts the blame for this on the West but Ankara's overtures towards its own Kurdish minority have been mostly strained by its own short-sighted Syria policy.

The U.S. Central Command said Wednesday that U.S. military forces conducted 18 airstrikes against Islamic State group targets near Kobani in the past 24 hours, destroying multiple fighting positions and striking 16 IS-occupied buildings. On Tuesday, the Pentagon had said that 21 airstrikes against Islamic State targets near Kobani overnight Monday marked the largest number there in a 24-hour period since the air campaign in Syria began last month.
The U.S.-led coalition has launched about 40 air strikes on the mainly Kurdish town of Kobani in the past 48 hours, the largest number since the strikes inside Syria began on Sept. 22 and illustrating the difficulty of staunching a nearly month-long Islamic State offensive on the town.

Pro-government militiamen have long been accused of looting homes in opposition areas they have captured and selling the stolen goods, creating what has become known as the "Sunni market" - a reference to Syria's majority Sunni Muslims who dominate the opposition to President Assad, a member of the heterodox Shia Alawite sect. But now loyalists are also being affected.
"In areas under government control, there is no unified central command. They are ruled by a cluster of mafia-style gangs," says one resident of Damascus, referring to the NDF.
"A few men with guns call themselves the 'protectors of the neighbourhood'. They then set the rules and bypass the law, in a country that is already lawless."
A new class is emerging in Syria of warlords who have grown rich with the money they have earned from kidnapping ransoms and theft. Their rise has led many to believe that President Assad cannot control his own militia anymore.
More and more Alawites who are losing family members on the battlefield could be heard repeating the saying: "The grave for us and the palaces for them."
JN activities in Idlib and Aleppo in the aftermath of the declaration of a caliphate by ISIS are indicative of a strategic realignment in the wake of the ISIS advance. The shift in JN’s disposition in Idlib and Aleppo, featuring prominently a shift in its approach to governance, is a solution to JN’s immediate need to quickly and efficiently establish a new center of gravity after surrendering Deir ez-Zour. It is likely that through these recent initiatives JN seeks to acquire a depth of control in a critical area within the rebel presence in northwestern Syria from which to regroup free from the threat of immediate ISIS incursion. Furthermore, the scope of JN’s consolidation in Idlib indicates the possibility that JN seeks to adjust to the rise of western-backed groups that have been recipients of TOW missile shipments. JN’s repositioning appears to have been largely successful, and is likely to enable JN forces to reinvigorate their campaign within Syria from a strengthened force posture centered in a critical rebel center of gravity.
The formation of a joint Arab-Kurdish operations room against ISIS in Northern Syria is a significant inflection that is likely to force a shift in ISIS’s calculus. Significantly, the YPG is also involved in the fight against ISIS near Azaz, where a rebel coalition including FSA groups, Jabhat al-Akrad, Jabhat al-Nusra (JN), and Islamic Front groups appear to have been initially successful in blunting the momentum of ISIS’s advance against a key rebel supply line near the Turkish border. Furthermore, in Hasaka province, the YPG has made a number of recent gains against ISIS. The YPG successfully recaptured the town of Jaza’a near the Iraqi border, which had been seized by ISIS forces on August 19. In addition, a YPG offensive against the ISIS stronghold of Tel Hamis is currently underway, and initial reports indicate a successful advance by the YPG.
In a highly successful operation titled the Serekeniye Martyrs’ Offensive, YPG forces expelled JN and ISIS forces from the border town of Ras al-Ayn and its surrounding countryside in July 2013. During these clashes, the YPG proved itself to be a capable fighting force able to evict coalitions of rebel groups from predominantly Kurdish territory. The success of the offensive was closely followed by PYD’s declaration of the Self-Rule Transitional Government, which conferred de-facto autonomy to the Kurdish-majority “cantons” of Afrin and Kobane, in Aleppo province, and Jazira, in Hasaka province.
Despite the reinvigoration of ISIS forces, the YPG was largely successful in defending its border against ISIS. The summer offensives therefore exhibit the ability of the YPG to resist ISIS gains, and to challenge the ISIS interior in a meaningful way. Newly united with rebel groups against ISIS within the Euphrates Volcano Operations Room, YPG forces are likely to contribute both effective fighters and critical staging capabilities that may lead to success against ISIS in the province. The joint operations room is a critical indicator of the possibilities for the formation of local counter-ISIS coalitions within Syria, and, if effective, may provide much-needed rebel momentum within the province. While insufficient to defeat ISIS, effective counter-ISIS action in Northern Syria may nonetheless encourage further exploration of local counter-ISIS alliances throughout Syria. However, the YPG’s participation has once again provoked a strong ISIS response. At the time of writing, an ISIS offensive against the Kobane canton has commenced and made sweeping initial gains. Thus the recent dynamics in Northern Syria illustrate that counter-ISIS movements face high risk in the short-term, and are likely to require additional assistance to be successful in resisting ISIS aggression.

Ozel wrote Oct. 2. “Do not forget that you have the backing of our great nation with 76 million people. Our eyes, ears and hearts are all with you. With one news coming from you, you should all feel confident that our armed forces will instantly get there.”

Syria warned Turkey on Friday against any military intervention on its territories, saying it would consider it an act of “aggression,” a day after the Turkish military was given authorization to conduct cross-border incursions against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) operating in the Arab country.
Mr Bayik insists that Turkey is backing IS fighters and that this is because they want to “crush” the Syrian Kurds’ fledgling autonomy. Turkey denies these claims. It supported the American-led coalition against IS, albeit only after the group released 46 Turkish hostages, seized at the Turkish consulate in Mosul on June 10th. As The Economist went to press, parliament was poised to pass a vaguely worded bill that allows Turkish troops to intervene against “terrorist groups” inside Iraq and Syria. It also allows foreign troops to use Turkish bases in the fight against the jihadists, a move that is bound to stir controversy among pro-secular Turks and the pious base of the ruling Justice and Development party (AK).
Turkey is deeply unnerved by the emergence of yet another Kurdish entity on its frontier. Making matters worse is that, unlike Iraqi Kurdistan, which is now Turkey’s biggest regional ally and trading partner, the Syrian Kurdish region, known as Rojava in Kurdish, is dominated by Turkey’s biggest foe, the PKK.
This unforeseen twist shoved Turkey’s long-festering Kurdish problem beyond its borders, propelling a panic-stricken AK to resume peace talks with Mr Ocalan. “Rojava’s fate and the peace process in Turkey are inseparable,” argues Arzu Yilmaz, an academic. Turkey’s plan, she adds, is to keep the ceasefire running until next summer’s parliamentary elections by throwing titbits at the Kurds.
Member of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s Alawite sect took to the streets in the city of Homs on Thursday to protest the horrific twin bombing at an elementary school.
The protest was the first of its kind by members of the Alawite sect from which President al-Assad draw staunch support since the 2011 uprising against his rule.
Assad’s most loyal army generals and security officers mainly hail from the Alawite sect, which is an offshoot of the Shiite Islam that is followed by Assad’s regional ally Iran.
The school bombing, which took place in Homs’ neighborhood of Akrama killed 31 people, mostly children, and wounded 74 others.
A Syrian state television reporter covering the protest was reportedly attacked by the angry protesters, who chanted anti-government slogans and demanded the departure of the Homs governor.

Syria has declared four chemical weapons facilities it hadn't mentioned before, a special representative of the U.N. secretary-general told the Security Council on Tuesday. The news heightened concerns that the Syrian government hasn't been fully open about its chemical weapons program.

Were ISIS and al-Nusra to call a truce or even unite under one banner in the face of U.S. bombardment, the balance of power among rebel groups in Syria would change radically. A militant Islamist coalition would likely overwhelm more moderate rebel groups -- and pose a greater threat to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Against a background of mistrust and brutality, a formal ISIS-al-Nusra alliance does not seem on the table -- but if al-Ansari is correct, more "local understandings" against Syrian regime forces are likely.
Asked about a recent statement by ISIS that it would soon extend its presence in southern Syria (the northern provinces of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor are its strongholds), al-Ansari welcomed the declaration.
Al-Julani stopped short of holding out an olive branch to ISIS. The only way al-Nusra could formally join ISIS is by pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, thereby declaring its own extinction. Al-Nusra leaders will also be aware that if Western strikes severely degrade ISIS, al-Nusra could fill the void.
The acid test will be what happens at local level. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights reports that a few dozen al-Nusra fighters joined ISIS in the Aleppo area after U.S. airstrikes began. Further targeting of al-Nusra facilities by U.S. strikes might hasten that process.
The US Department of Defense and President Barack Obama succeeded in convincing Congress last month to approve a measure that authorizes the government to fund, train and equip moderate rebels in Syria in order to provide anti-ISIS forces with the resources to counter the campaign that continues to let the group seize entire cities in the Middle East as recently as this week. Nevertheless, a spokesperson for the Pentagon told the Guardian for an article published on Monday that exactly who will lead those rebel forces remains unresolved. “No decision has been made as to who will lead the program,” commander Elissa Smith, the Pentagon spokesperson, told the Guardian.
Spencer Ackerman, the American journalist who wrote Monday’s piece, reported that “the Pentagon has yet to even assign a US officer to the task of determining which rebels are trustworthy and capable enough to comprise that force.” “Once selected for the training, the rebels will be led by Major General Michael Nagata, a special-operations veteran. The supposedly moderate Free Syrian Army is expected to form the kernel of the proxy force,” Ackerman continued. “But the Pentagon, which hopes to field an initial force of nearly 5,000 to fight Isis out of its Syrian strongholds, has yet to determine which fighters amid Syria’s panoply of mostly Islamist rebel groups are eligible to receive US cash, heavy weaponry and Nagata’s expertise. Isis commands as few as 20,000 fighters, and as many as 31,000, according to public US estimates.”
Indeed, American lawmakers have only approved a plan that will put weapons and resources into the hands of a militia merely one-fourth of the size of the so-called Islamic State’s army. Late last month, however, Pentagon officials acknowledged during a press conference that an infantry of up to 15,000 fighters may need to be trained in order to actually pose a problem to the militants.

The main aim is to generate fear in ISIS' ranks, said the head of "White Shroud" - a group that says it has killed more than 100 ISIS fighters in attacks in Deir al-Zor province in recent months. The name reflects that aim: White Shroud is a reference to the death shroud it says awaits ISIS fighters responsible for crimes against the Syrian people, said the group's leader, Abu Aboud, in an interview via Skype.
As the United States advances plans to train and equip the moderate opposition to President Bashar Assad as part of its strategy to tackle ISIS, the appearance of such groups shows how it has generated new enemies on the ground. Abu Aboud, who declined to give his real name for security reasons, was a commander in an anti-Assad insurgent group crushed by the better armed and financed ISIS as it seized almost full control of Deir al-Zor earlier this year.
The small band he now leads is in no position to deal a major blow to ISIS. But it does pose an extra challenge as the United States and its allies target the group in airstrikes in both Syria and Iraq. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the war, has recorded a rising number of attacks by gunmen on ISIS targets in Deir al-Zor province. Together with Raqqa province further north, Deir al-Zor forms the bedrock of ISIS' influence in Syria.
White Shroud shows no mercy to ISIS: when it manages to abduct one of its members, it is only to "liquidate" him later on, said Abu Aboud. It operates in and around the town of Al Bukamal at the Iraqi border - an area of crucial importance to ISIS as the link between the territory it controls in Syria and Iraq. The group currently numbers 300 members, said Abu Aboud. "Eighty percent of the members of White Shroud did not take part in combat before (ISIS) came. We trained them and they joined White Shroud because of the great oppression they felt after ISIS took control," said Abu Aboud.

The notion that Ankara would prefer ISIS on its border as opposed to the PKK is one that Meral disputes, pointing out that Ankara moved to formally list ISIS as a terror group last year. “Even before then ISIS militants were clashing with groups backed by Turkey and increasingly threatening Turkey and calling it an ‘apostate’ state.” The reality is that ISIS will inevitably target Turkey - a nation with a history already marked by terrorist attacks. “Sooner or later, ISIS will be a major direct threat for Turkey and instability on Turkish borders and such a radical group will create more problems,” Meral said.
But Turkey could have better aided Kurdish forces in Kobane to prevent the ISIS onslaught, possibly providing intelligence and facilitating the ease of border crossing, Fishman asserted; had they, he said, “this dire situation could have been diverted.”
In regard to the U.S.-led coalition’s nebulous long-term strategy in Iraq and Syria, Ankara’s reluctance to intervene in Kobane is predicated on a two-fold reasoning; on the one hand, the Turkish government has remained consistently against any military cooperation that could provide either a direct or de-facto boost to Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
More than 140 young Austrians are thought to have gone to Syria and Iraq to join ISIL, according to the Ministry of Interior, a number expected to rise as long as the conflict there continues. While this presents a small share of the 12,000 foreign fighters estimated to have been recruited by ISIL so far, Austria with its population of only 8.4 million tops European countries on a per-capita basis, including France and Germany with 700 and 500 fighters, respectively.
This high proportion of Austrian ISIL recruits, many of whom are minors including girls, has given rise to concerns about the extent to which radicalisation has infiltrated the country's Muslim youth. This fear has been further compounded by media coverage, which many Muslims have criticised for feeding into the propaganda of groups such as ISIL.

According to extracts of a UN report published by Britain's Guardian newspaper on Friday, around 15,000 people have travelled to fight alongside Takfiri militants group ISIL and other hardcore militant groups from "countries that have not previously faced challenges relating to al-Qaeda.
It is unclear what happened to him, but he told his interrogators: "My name is Sayed Ahmad Hussaini. The Iranians pay people like me to come here and fight. I am from Afghanistan and I am an immigrant in Iran. The Iranians brought us to Syria to fight to defend the Zainab shrine. I don't want to fight anymore." There are many Afghan immigrants in Iran, trying to find some shelter from the decades of war that have torn apart their land. He says he was trained and then sent to assist the regime.
Their motivations were complicated. Most said they sought money - a likely motivation as the NATO drawdown in Afghanistan is changing the Taliban's dynamics and reducing the amount of money sloshing around in the country. They also wanted to fight America -- saying that fighting the moderate Syrian rebels the regime is targeting most heavily and who receive U.S. assistance - was one way of continuing this fight from Afghanistan.
"We want to go there for two reasons one is to fight against those who are being assisted by Americans in Syria and secondly Iran pays us to fight in Syria," said one man. "Those who fight against Assad regime are America's slaves. That is why we want to fight them and kill them."
An afghan was caught in Syria, fighting for the government. He says he was trained and sent by the Iranians to defend Shia srhrines in Syria.
The man is not Pashtu, probably Uzbek or Hazara and speeks Dari.
So far that seems acceptable, heis probably not sunni and so on the government/Iran side.
But then the story suggests that Iran is recruiting former Taliban fighters to fight on Iran's side in Syria. This is supported by traveling to Afghanistan and questionoing villagers.
That does not make sense.
The Taliban are extreme sunni and closer to the Syrian rebels. The Taliban attacks Shia people in Afghanistan/Pakistan. Why would a non Pashtu and probably non sunni be in the Taliban?

Last March, the bunkered post, surmounted by a broken communications tower, came under a ferocious siege by Islamist rebels led by Moslem al-Chichani, the notorious - or legendary, depending on your point of view - red-bearded Chechen leader who moves constantly around the battlefields of Syria and Iraq. Outnumbered, the Syrian soldiers held out for a full week - they were all special forces, like the men at Ash-Shaqraa - when General Maarouf called for an armoured personnel carrier to evacuate his wounded.
The armoured vehicle that emerged through the fog, however, was not the one the general had called for. Driven by a suicide bomber, it crashed into the centre of the compound with 15 tons of explosives aboard, detonating with a roar heard all the way to the Mediterranean, killing almost all the soldiers, including General Maarouf and tearing open a crater 30 feet wide and 15 feet deep.
The civil war in Syria poses a thorny problem for U.S. policymakers. The conflict has morphed from a popular uprising against an autocratic regime into a multi-sided battle involving government forces, pro-government militias, Hezbollah, Iraqi Shi'ite militias, secular/moderate rebels, Kurdish separatists, traditional Islamist rebels, nationalist Salafi-jihadist rebels, and the transnational Salafi-jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) movement. Most neighboring states and several Persian Gulf states have sent arms and money to one or more of the factions in this war. Iran and Russia have consistently supported the Assad regime, including providing advanced weaponry, since the onset of the conflict. The outcome of the conflict will affect Middle East stability and regional political dynamics for years — perhaps decades — and could exacerbate a wider Shi'a-versus-Sunni sectarian conflict in the region.
Momentum has shifted several times during the course of the conflict. Defections from the Syrian army, rapidly growing rebel ranks, and the regime's loss of key ground convinced many observers early on that the Assad's demise was only a matter of time. The Assad regime has exploited rebel weaknesses and its own superior weaponry and external support to shift the momentum once again in its favor. The lineup of antagonists is complex and confused. While still seeing the Assad regime as an adversary based on its patron-client relationship with Iran and its implacable hostility toward Israel, U.S. decisionmakers are also dealing with the threats caused by the dramatic recent gains made in Iraq by ISIS and the influence it wields within the Syrian rebel movement. To examine these challenges, this perspective draws on a December 2013 RAND workshop to assess four possible future scenarios for the conflict in Syria: prolonged conflict, regime victory, regime collapse, and negotiated settlement. The authors update and reassess these scenarios based on developments in Syria and Iraq through August 2014 and explore the implications that each has for Syria, the region, and the United States.
Key Findings
Workshop participants felt that prolonged conflict was the best descriptor for the situation in Syria as of December 2013, but momentum seemed to be leaning toward regime victory.
Negotiated settlement was deemed the least likely of the possible scenarios.
Regime collapse, while not considered a likely outcome, was perceived to be the worst possible outcome for U.S. strategic interests.
Developments in Syria and Iraq through August 2014 occurred with unanticipated speed and revealed initial analysis to be overly cautious.
Steady gains made by the Assad regime and worsened friction and dysfunction among the opposition groups, but also the shift in ISIS focus from Syria to Iraq, has allowed the regime to make progress against the opposition more rapidly than most of our workshop participants foresaw.
It is regime victory that now appears to be most likely in the near to mid-term, due to the confluence of military and political factors favoring pro-Assad forces.
However, regime victory would not be as big of a blow to ISIS as was originally believed, because ISIS's advances in Iraq have given the group a new territorial base from which to operate.
Similarly, regime victory in Syria will not offer as large a win to Iran as previously thought. ISIS's gains in Iraq worsened Iran's strategic position in the Middle East and established a new threat to Tehran on its western border.
Despite the revised perspective on the plausibility of regime victory in Syria, the situation is still fluid and momentum can shift again.
Prolonged conflict could become more likely, for example, if the rebels acquired a new capability that helped counter the regime's advantage in firepower, such as man-portable air defense systems or precision rocket systems and/or mortars.
A major increase in ISIS's battlefield effectiveness could also alter current trends. ISIS's capture of a number of the Iraqi army's weapon stockpiles in June 2014 gave the group access to a large amount of modern weaponry. If ISIS is able to develop the maintenance and logistical infrastructure to operate these weapons reliably over the long term, it is conceivable that they could challenge the Syrian army in maneuver warfare in a way that no other rebel group has been able to.
The picture's above are taken Aleppo, and show some of the 33 MiG-23MLD Flogger-K's and MiG-23UB Flogger-C's that were transferred to Syria during 2008 from Belorussian stock's. They dont seem to carry any Syrian markings, so are proberly used as spares to keep the 100 or so fleet of earlier delivered MiG-23's airworthy, most of which are being upgraded. With that in mind, its also possible that some of the above may be upgraded, but it would be a pretty costly exercise to deliver the aircraft then take them back for upgrade!

JN Attacks Idlib City
Following months of consolidation in the province, JN’s escalation in Jabal al-Zawiya represents the expansion of an ongoing and successful campaign to carve a JN military
stronghold deep within rebel-held Syria. However, while the seizure of Jabal al-Zawiya was a large step forward in JN’s consolidation, it is not clear that it was actually JN’s intent to do so at this time. As clashes broke out between JN and the SRF, JN forces were heavily engaged in an operation against regime forces in Idlib city launched the same day. Regime forces had made large advances on October 23 by seizing the town of Morek and appeared to be staging for an advance farther north. In response, JN launched an attack against the regime stronghold of Idlib city on October 26 in an apparent attempt to force a reallocation of regime forces to its critical terrain and
forestall a regime attack on Khan Shaykhoun, north of Morek. The operation began with a signature JN attack utilizing four suicide bombers targeting regime checkpoints in Idlib city to allow a penetration by rebel forces, which included a local Salafi-Jihadist group named Jund al-Aqsa, the FSA’s Hamza Division, and the SRF-affiliated Suqour al-Ghab.
JN and rebel forces made immediate gains within the city and captured a number of buildings including the governor’s mansion and the police headquarters, allegedly with assistance from local police forces. However, the eruption of clashes in southern Idlib appears to have forced JN and rebel forces to abandon the front in Idlib city in order to address the escalating situation in Jabal al-Zawiya, allowing the regime to quickly reassert control over the provincial capital. In his interview with JN’s Manara al-Bayda media foundation on November 4, Joulani asserted that JN was forced to withdraw from its operation in Idlib city in order to respond to the SRF’s aggression against JN and other rebels, highlighting JN’s assertion that it prioritized the fight against the Assad regime despite the outburst of intra-rebel violence in Jabal al-Zawiya

As the world’s attention stays focused on IS, Mr Assad has increased his attacks. Between October 20th and 31st his regime carried out 850 aerial attacks—including the dropping of indiscriminate barrel bombs—on rebel-held areas, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britain-based monitoring group. On October 29th the regime bombed a camp for displaced people in Idleb province. Last month it killed six local citizen journalists (compared to one killed by Islamic State), including one who died under torture after two years of detention.
The second prong of the strategy announced by Barack Obama on September 10th—training and arming moderate Syrian rebels—has yet to start. There may soon be none left to back. Moderate forces have been in decline since 2012, when hardlinerebels including Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, came to the fore. The few mainstream groups left are struggling to survive. Mr Assad is closing down supply routes into Aleppo used by moderate rebels, while IS, which has regularly fought such groups, remains a threat. So too is Jabhat al-Nusra, which in early November took over several rebel bases in Idleb province, their last northern stronghold. Those targeted included Jamal Maarouf, an American-backed rebel leader, and Harakat Hazm, the first group to get anti-tank missiles from America.
The Pentagon says it doesn’t see “current events as a major setback” to Mr Obama’s strategy. But al-Qaeda’s local affiliate is edging closer to Bab al-Hawa, a border crossing with Turkey used by moderate groups. On November 6th reports said America had launched air strikes against the group.

However, on November 1, JN seized the town of*Binine from these forces in addition to the Harakat Hazm stronghold of Khan Sibel northeast of Ma’arat al-Nu’man. “The main problem with plans that arm and train the ‘moderates’—who ominously are moderate only in their fighting abilities,” said Skinner, “is that it assumes perfect knowledge, or ‘good enough’ knowledge, about the people being armed. When in fact there is nothing close to that.… The background info on these fighters is next to nothing and misleading, especially in Syria, where we don’t have a liaison relationship, and so the vast majority of even check-the-box vetting is by third parties [who are] out-of-the-country players with a stake in the game.
“As in Afghanistan, we can get scammed and misled at every stage with tragic results,” Skinner added. “One can’t simply build a loyal effective army thirdhand. It’s like running a want-ad that says, ‘Only Moderates Show Up for Free Weapons and Paid Training,’ and believing that is effective screening.”
“It’s one thing if you’re talking about a few dozen, or even a few hundred, individuals to run name checks or traces on,” agrees Martin Reardon, a former high-ranking FBI counterterrorism official. “But the first group of [Syrian] rebels to be trained [by the U.S.] is supposed to number upwards of 5,000. Assuming the administration can identify that many ‘moderate’ rebels to begin with, it would be virtually impossible to accomplish even minimal background checks with any degree of reliability.”
Another troubling lesson from the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Syria is that today’s moderate can become tomorrow’s extremist. “Just because that guy may be moderate today—who may really and truly be a moderate and despise Al-Qaeda or whatever—what if that guy is seen walking into the Green Zone by his friend so-and-so at the checkpoint?” the former CIA vetting expert said. “And everybody knows those guys coming into the Green Zone are there to see the CIA, or at least that’s the assumption. So they grab his father, his son or his brother, and they take him captive. What’s to stop them from forcing him to strap a bomb to his body and walking back into the next meeting with an [improvised explosive device] on his chest?”
Given such accounts, the odds of keeping loyal troops seems like panning for gold—or worse, an exercise in self-delusion. But the former CIA operative, who served in a variety of Middle Eastern posts as well as headquarters, said Obama administration officials aren’t fibbing about their faith in the system. They just may not realize it’s shot through with holes. “Most of them think they’re doing it pretty good, but they’re also not our best and brightest in terms of knowing how to vet,” this person said. “So I don't think it's a charade, I think it's misguided. They don’t know how poor it actually is.”
So what? responds former senior CIA operations officer Charles Faddis, who led a covert team into Kurdistan in advance of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. He says it’s time to act, no matter how shaky the foundations of the CIA’s Syrian army. “You can’t run covert action without getting your hands dirty. We can’t sit on the sidelines and have discreet, antiseptic contacts with these guys and accomplish anything,” Faddis said. “If we’re going to do this, we need to wade in.”
“ISIS commanders told us to fear nothing at all because there was full cooperation with the Turks,” said Omer of crossing the border into Turkey, “and they reassured us that nothing will happen, especially when that is how they regularly travel from Raqqa and Aleppo to the Kurdish areas further northeast of Syria because it was impossible to travel through Syria as YPG [National Army of Syrian Kurdistan] controlled most parts of the Kurdish region.”
