STRATCOM sees role change for bombers
US Marine Corps General James Cartwright, commander of STRATCOM, said on 6 November that US Air Force (USAF) bombers are increasingly in demand to support conventional forces, delivering precision weapons such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition and the Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile. "The likelihood of flying something like a B-52 from here to some adversary that was nuclear armed and well defended has diminished," he said

Warrior armament is revised to align with FRES
The move comes amid confirmation that the UK Ministry of Defence is looking to merge the cannon (and perhaps the weapon station) selected for WLIP with the scout version of the projected Future Rapid Effect System (FRES). This will mean that additional weapons and ammunition will be procured at lower unit costs as well as providing the user with improved training and logistic support.Following the return of the re-submitted PQQs, the Joint WLIP IPT will undertake a structured and quantitative assessment, which is expected to result in a downselect by early December and a draft invitation to tender (ITT) issued to industry in early 2007

Central Africa's weakest link
The northeast of the Central African Republic is perhaps the most remote place in Africa, the archetype of the 'ungoverned spaces' over which the Pentagon loses sleep. Hundreds of kilometres from the nearest city and without obvious mineral or agricultural riches, it is being drawn into the most destructive war in contemporary Africa.Rebels who seized Birao town on 30 October claim they are fighting for a new political settlement in the Central African Republic

Deconstructing Hizbullah's -surprise military prowess
The 34-day war between Hizbullah and Israel in July and August has fundamentally changed the dynamics along the Blue Line, the UN name for Lebanon's southern border. For Hizbullah, it represents the onset of a third phase in its two-decade campaign against Israel from south Lebanon. The Iran-backed Shia organisation is in a transitory mode while it assesses the new dynamics along the Blue Line, which have effectively curtailed the freedom of action enjoyed for the past six years by the Islamic Resistance (IR), Hizbullah's military wing
