STRATCOM sees role change for bombers
US Marine Corps General James Cartwright, commander of STRATCOM, said on 6 November that US Air Force (USAF) bombers are increasingly in demand to support conventional forces, delivering precision weapons such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition and the Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile. "The likelihood of flying something like a B-52 from here to some adversary that was nuclear armed and well defended has diminished," he said

Warrior armament is revised to align with FRES
The move comes amid confirmation that the UK Ministry of Defence is looking to merge the cannon (and perhaps the weapon station) selected for WLIP with the scout version of the projected Future Rapid Effect System (FRES). This will mean that additional weapons and ammunition will be procured at lower unit costs as well as providing the user with improved training and logistic support.Following the return of the re-submitted PQQs, the Joint WLIP IPT will undertake a structured and quantitative assessment, which is expected to result in a downselect by early December and a draft invitation to tender (ITT) issued to industry in early 2007

Pakistan's anti-militant balancing act
According to much of Pakistan's domestic press, reflecting widespread popular opinion, the US was responsible for the strike on a pro-Taliban madrassah (religious school) in the tribal agency of Bajaur on 30 October. The pre-dawn raid, which the authorities revealed involved Pakistani helicopter gunships and troops operating with intelligence supplied by the US and NATO, razed the seminary, killing approximately 80 students and teachers

Central Africa's weakest link
The northeast of the Central African Republic is perhaps the most remote place in Africa, the archetype of the 'ungoverned spaces' over which the Pentagon loses sleep. Hundreds of kilometres from the nearest city and without obvious mineral or agricultural riches, it is being drawn into the most destructive war in contemporary Africa.Rebels who seized Birao town on 30 October claim they are fighting for a new political settlement in the Central African Republic

Gaza on the verge of explosion
Israeli forays into Gaza Strip continue to draw media attention, but more inconspicuous activities are playing out in southern Gaza Strip as Hamas prepares for the inevitable clash for domination of the area. The recently raised Hamas Special Security Service (Murabitun) is rapidly growing into the dominant power base in the struggle for supremacy in the Palestinian Territories, but President Mahmoud Abbas has already set plans in motion to counter this rising threat to his authority. While Israel is targeting Palestinian militia throughout Gaza, the Palestinians continue to fight among themselves

Deconstructing Hizbullah's -surprise military prowess
The 34-day war between Hizbullah and Israel in July and August has fundamentally changed the dynamics along the Blue Line, the UN name for Lebanon's southern border. For Hizbullah, it represents the onset of a third phase in its two-decade campaign against Israel from south Lebanon. The Iran-backed Shia organisation is in a transitory mode while it assesses the new dynamics along the Blue Line, which have effectively curtailed the freedom of action enjoyed for the past six years by the Islamic Resistance (IR), Hizbullah's military wing

US urges African states to address maritime security
The conference is part of the US-led African Maritime Governance Initiative, a broader US effort to encourage African countries to take control of their "notoriously ungoverned" maritime possessions, overrun in many cases with piracy, narcotics trafficking and illegal fishing, according to Teresa Whelan, the US deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Africa Affairs."We are trying to call attention to this deficit of security," Whelan told Jane's on 3 November.

Industry warns on timeline for UK submarine
Giving evidence before the House of Commons Defence Committee (HCDC), officials from both BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce said that the industry needed a firm commitment from government on a future submarine build programme in order to assure continuity of work and long-term viability. Murray Easton, managing director of BAE Systems Submarines, the UK's sole submarine builder, went as far as to claim that failure to commit to a Vanguard-class replacement programme in the near term would have "a catastrophic effect" on the UK's submarine enterprise. The UK government has yet to decide whether to replace the strategic deterrent capability currently vested in the four Vanguard-class submarines and their Trident D5 strategic weapon system
