What's Cooking: Kosher on the tube?

The Orthodox Union, the leader in kosher certification, announces that it's negotiating with major TV networks to launch a kosher cooking channel. If all goes well, "Simply Kosher" will debut later this summer, sponsored by Gold Pure Food Products Co. Inc., famous for its horseradish and "well-known for its humorous commercials around Passover." (Who knew?) The show will be a part of a larger kosher cooking channel on the OU website, www.ou.org, which will also include food personalities such as Ashley Farnell, Norene Gilletz and Harvey Pearlman, known on the OU website for their contribution to Shabbat Shalom, OU's weekly newsletter. The cooking program will feature kosher experts on a rotating basis with the first eight episodes hosted by Jamie Geller, a freelance producer for the Food Network, and author of a cookbook tentatively titled, "The 15-Minute Kosher Cookbook: Fast and Easy Recipes from the Bride Who Knew Nothing."

Martha's still back

Skeptics who doubted that Martha Stewart could overcome her prison rap sheet must be eating some humble pie (with a lattice crust.) New to her empire is the Martha Stewart Newsletter, an ad-free guide to her favorite things. The July/August edition is its second "test" issue to gauge interest; a one-year subscription to the monthly is $19.95, through her newly relaunched website, www.marthastewart.com. The debut newsletter includes seed sources for gardeners, "must-have basils," ordering info for velvet leggings "perfect for yoga or relaxing at home," and a poem by former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins, along with Martha's famous calendar and a shortbread recipe. She leads with a photo gallery of herself through the years, from an ingenue model to savvy magnate. Martha's back? She never really went away.

Do the Mashed Potato

The contest deadline has passed, but we're sharing this website for your viewing pleasure and because the Minnesota entry just has to win! The Idaho Potato Commission has sponsored its first Internet video contest for videos featuring "America's favorite vegetable." Celebrity potatohead Dawn Wells, a k a Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," sets the tone with a video of her unique way of peeling potatoes. But of the 16 posted videos, Minneapolis' Steve Barone sets the bar with the video of him wrestling in a pen of mashed potatoes as part of the annual Potato Days in Barnesville, Minn., in the Red River Valley between Fergus Falls and Moorhead.
