A German torpedo was detonated off Plymouth on Monday 28 January 2008. "There were two incidents last week, one was a couple of British mark 17 bouyant mines on Newquay beach. The mine cases have been there 40 years, one was already known about but the second one appeared due to sand shift.

"Over the previous three to four weeks they've lost three feet [91cm] of sand due to tidal changes. It's not unusual, the sand moves with tide and they send diggers down there to push the sand back.

"We went down and they're empty mine casings, no danger to anyone and they've been there 40 years, so we left them there. The council would have to pay someone to dipose of them, but they're no danger so they'll stay there 'til they rust away."

The Southern Diving Unit maintain 24-hour seven-day-week bomb disposal cover 365 days a year. This week the team has dealt with four other incidents, including two British mines reported on Newquay beach.
