if you mean the kernel - the command is: uname -a

First you need to get in "super user" mode
go to a terminal and write su
enter your root password
now I dont know whice editor you have but you need to open etc/X11/xorg.conf
and then go to the link that shimi gave you to see what you need to edit....

will not do you good unless you logged into it as root which is a bad thing (tm).
Besides you'd need to restart the graphic interface when you're done.
So it is best to go to the console mode (alt+ctrl+f2) and edit the file from there.
