More MRAPs: 1,200 MaxxPro MPVs from Navistar

Navistar MPV
Navistar subsidiary International Military and Government LLC (IMG) in, Warrenville, IL won a $623.1 million indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract (M67854-07-D-5032) for 1,200 additional Category I (CAT I) Mine Resistance Ambush Protected (MRAP) Low Rate Initial Production vehicles. As previous DID MRAP articles have noted, CAT I MRUV vehicles are patrol vehicles that can carry 6 passengers including the driver and front seat, as opposed to the larger CAT 2 JERRV 'squad' vehicles. The MRUV role is similar to a Hummer's, albeit with more carrying capacity and much more protection.
International Truck's Mine Protected Vehicle, recently dubbed the "MaxxPro" by its manufacturer, is actually collaboration with an Israeli firm who provides up-armored vehicles for the Marines. Their offering appears to have overcome lukewarm initial interest - but even successful survivors of Aberdeen's tests may not offer enough protection against the class of land mines now seeing wider use in Iraq...
Israeli firm Plasan Sasa has been making up-armoring kits for the Marine Corps' MTVR trucks for several years now. The Kibbutz Sasa firm has also developed its own light protected vehicle called the Caracal, which has been examined by the US Marines for a different role. International chose Plasan Sasa as its partner, with the aim of developing an armored MRAP-candidate vehicle based around IMG's WorkStar 7000 truck chassis.
Unlike the HMMWV's frame, IMG's heavy-duty truck chassis would have the load capacity required to handle the weight of additional armor et. al. - without wearing out early. Their final design positions the v-shaped crew compartment on top of that chassis, using its armor and shape to dissipate blasts around the crew area and minimize damage. Extensive use of components from International's trucks, including predictive maintenance features, would ensure that their entry was both producible in large numbers and maintainable in the field.
U.S. Orders 1,200 MRAPs

The U.S. Marines have ordered 1,200 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles from International Military and Government, company officials said. The $623 million purchase is the largest to date in a joint program that has since 2003 ordered roughly 1,700 of the armored vehicles and is slated to order a total of 23,200 by 2010.
The firm, a subsidiary of Navistar International, was one of nine vehicle makers asked by Marine Corps Systems Command to deliver test vehicles in January.
Navistar officials say they heard of the deal from the offices of Mississippi members of Congress, including Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss, and Rep. Roger Wicker, R-Miss.
“We have not been officially notified yet, but congressional delegations are rarely wrong on these matters,” said Roy Wiley, spokesman for Navistar International. “We did extremely well during the tests, and we are extremely pleased.”
The engines will be made in Melrose Park, Ill., the chassis in Garland, Texas, and final assembly with armor in West Point, Miss., Wiley said.
Systems Command officials declined to comment.
