A seaquake with a Richter scale force of 6.7 has struck the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean, causing people to flee their homes.

Officials and witnesses said the undersea quake triggered panic and fear of the recurrence of the devastating 2004 tsunami that ravaged the chain of 536 island, leaving hundreds dead and 3,000 still missing.

Residents ran out of their homes as the powerful jolt rattled buildings, already weakened by a series of earthquakes that have hit the Andamans since the tsunami.

The epicenter of the quake was 115 kilometers (70 miles) southwest from the capital Port Blair.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said that based on historical earthquake and tsunami data a destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist.

"We have not issued any tsunami alert although it occurred at a depth of around 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) in the Andaman Sea," a local Disaster Management Cell spokesperson stated.

The Indian navy ordered its ships not to approach Andaman shores until an all-clear was sounded by the local military command.
