EFILE-AIRSHOW-US contractors team to explore multirole missile

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 16 (Reuters) - Three U.S. contractors have teamed up to explore new multirole missiles for advanced warplanes such as Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
Alliant Techsystems (ATK.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Lockheed said on Wednesday they were eying a missile suited to both air-to-air combat as well as air-to-ground, unlike anything currently in the U.S. arsenal.
The potential market for such weapons could total billions of dollars, James Pitts, president of Northrop's Electronic Systems business unit, told Reuters after a joint news conference here at the Farnborough International Airshow.
Northrop would contribute knowhow from its most advanced radar, known as Active Electronically Scanned Array, or AESA, which greatly enhances the ability to track and engage targets, he said.
Lockheed's F-35 is a family of radar-evading fighter aircraft designed for overseas sale as well as for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. Its development has been co-financed by the United States, Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Denmark and Norway.
The three companies said they also hoped to arm Lockheed's F-22 Raptor fighter jet as well as unmanned aerial systems and other warplanes that may be deployed over the next decade.
"This team, with its current weapons programs and demonstrated advanced technology capabilities, is confident that it will offer ... best-value options to meet this need," the trio said in a joint statement.
Technology exploration in such a project may take two to three years before developing a prototype weapon, Ron Abbott, executive vice president of Lockheed's Missiles and Fire Control business unit, told the press conference.
Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed would serve as the system integrator, he said.
ATK would add its knowledge of sensors, rocket motors and warheads among other capabilities, said Jack Cronin, president of the company's Mission Systems business unit. (Editing by David Holmes)
