The first 'Seehund' operation against the Thames Estuary in January 1945 ended in disaster; 16 losses out of the 18 boats involved! The remaining crews quickly gained in combat experience, however, and the second sortie, on 17 January 1945 had no losses.
The 'Seehunds' operated relatively successfully from February to May 1945, sinking 19 freighters, totalling 18,451 tons GRT, and damaging 3 others, totaling 18,384 tons GRT. Only ten per cent of the boats were lost. On the other hand, it is estimated that the Allies required 500 vessels and 1500 aircraft to control the North Sea and spot the 3 to 5 'Seehunds' operating there daily.
In April 1945 two special 'Seehund' missions were carried out to supply, the isolated German base at Dunkirk with food. Instead of torpedoes the boats carried food-containers (nicknamed 'butter-torpedoes'); when returning these containers were filled with the mail of the Dunkirk defenders.
