עם 736 הרוגים בלואיזינה וסופה חדשה ריטה הקרבה לעיר הופסקה חזרת התושבים לעיר.
הבית הלבן התריע הבוקר מפני השיבה לעיר כמו גם האדמירל העומד בבראש כח המשימה לעיר.
החשש שכל הפרצות שנסתמו יפרצו מחדש.

New Orleans Mayor Suspends Reopening Of City - Death Toll Rises To 736
NEW ORLEANS -- The mayor of New Orleans has suspended his plan to repopulate the city in stages.
The news came as the state Health Department raised the death toll from Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana by 90 to 736. The toll across the Gulf Coast was 973.Mayor Ray Nagin said it's partly because of the potential threat from a new tropical storm heading toward the Gulf of Mexico.He said more rain might bring new flooding, since the city's pumping facilities aren't at full capacity. His announcement came after repeated warnings from top federal officials -- including President George W. Bush -- that the city is unsafe.Nagin spoke hours after residents of the Algiers neighborhood, across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter, began to return.Speaking at the White House Monday morning, Bush said officials have "deep concern" about Tropical Storm Rita, which appears headed into the Gulf of Mexico. Bush said if that storm brings a lot of rain, the levees could break.The repopulation is also worrying the Coast Guard official in charge of the federal hurricane recovery effort. Adm. Thad Allen urged the mayor not to rush people back into areas where basic services are still not in place.
