Queen of Israeli song Shoshana Damari dies at 83
Shoshana Damari to be Laid to Rest on Friday 17/2/06
Israel’s award-winning singer Shoshana Damari will be laid to rest on Friday in Trumpeldor Cemetery in Tel Aviv. The funeral procession will begin at the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv at 11:30am
Damari died in Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital on Tuesday morning. She was admitted last week with pneumonia and her condition deteriorated quickly.
The 83-year-old star was born in Yemen in 1923, and immigrated with her family at age two. She was recognized as one of Israel’s greats, contributing to the nation’s culture with her talents, recognized by a number of past leaders. She was particularly loved for her eagerness to perform for IDF soldiers in any situation, never willing to be deterred by the dangers of the battlefield.
"Kalaniyot," the ballad that was playing in Damari's hospital room on Tuesday as she slipped away, is a love song, but it is more than that, too. The refrain goes, in part: Sunsets in the mountain will flame and fade
Yet anemones will always flourish
Many a storm will roar and rage
Yet anemones will always newly flame
The anemones, of course, symbolize the Jewish people, who, through the generations, never forgot their attachment to the land of Israel. That attachment, Shoshana Damarai seemed to be saying, could always newly flame.
JERUSALEM 14/2/06 (Reuters) - Shoshana Damari, considered by many in the Jewish state to be the queen of Israeli song, died on Tuesday after a short illness, her family said. She was 83.With her husky contralto, the Yemeni-born singer gave voice to many Hebrew songs that became anthems of the Jewish state's early years following independence in 1948.

JERUSALEM, Feb. 14 — Shoshana Damari, one of Israel's most popular singers, with a career dating back to the founding of the state, died on Tuesday in Tel Aviv. She was 83.
The cause was complications of pneumonia, her family said. Her signature song, "Anemones," was played at her hospital bedside in her dying moments as family and friends sang along, they said.
Born in Yemen, Ms. Damari came to Israel at age 2. She was best known for her nationalist anthems, popular with the Israeli military, and was deeply associated with the generation of the 1948-49 war. Her rendition of that war's song, "Friendship," was the favorite of Yitzhak Rabin, and she sang it at his memorial service after his assassination.
In 1988 she was awarded the state's most prestigious honor, the Israel Prize. She sang songs written by some of Israel's greatest poets.
President Moshe Katsav led the tributes to her role in expressing Israel's national identity, describing her as a woman who "united the country and who conveyed hope and optimism." The defense minister, Shaul Mofaz, said her "songs would remain in the hearts of soldiers for years to come," while the acting prime minister, Ehud Olmert, said in a statement: "Her cultural achievements will not be forgotten, neither will the legacy that she has bequeathed to entire generations who grew up on — and will yet grow up on — her songs. We will always remember her as the voice of the nation."
At 16 she married her manager, Shlomo Bushmi, who died 19 years ago. She is survived by her daughter, Navah, of Canada, according to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot.
