סביר להניח שמדובר במש"ק מודיעין ולא בקצין מודיעין. התפקיד הוא לא פיזי - הוא בעיקר משרדי, אם כי במבצעים אתה בהחלט יכול למצוא את עצמך בחפ"ק.
איש מודיעין אחראי על איסוף מודיעין בגזרה שלו וקבלת מודיעין מרמה ממונה - אתה למעשה הצינור שמעביר מידע רלוונטי לגזרת הלחימה למפקד. קצין המודיעין הוא ה"בוס" של מחלקת המודיעין.
הצבא מוריד את הקבע במידה וזה מתאים לו - מכיוון שהכשרת מודיעין היא ארוכה ומושקעת, סיכוי נמוך מאוד שקצין מודיעין ביחידת שטח יקבל קיצור.
