Don’t Let Hungary Get Away With It
Dr. Mohammed T. Al-Rasheed,

The Saudis are upset with Hungary, and rightly so. You can’t go around shooting your mouth off when in a public position and expect people to take it as a “joke.” A joke it wasn’t, and the Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, has become the joke himself as he tries to eat his words.
Hungary isn’t exactly the powerhouse of military or cultural bravado. Apart from paprika and the Gabor sisters, their only recorded contribution to human history is the Hun; not exactly a race of civilizing influence.
But let us step back from name-calling and invective and look at this issue more closely. It is a reality that in the neighborhood of nations there are the powerful, the cultured, the civilized, the militarized, not to mention rogues and street urchins. You might also add the deluded who call themselves great, for example, and have nothing left of greatness but a defunct title.
In the last four years we have learned the brutal lessons of politics: You negotiate with the powerful, you invade the rogue, you sanction the unruly, you appease the mighty, and you slam the urchins. It is in a day’s work for any foreign minister of any country.
I’ll leave you to guess where Hungary fits in this formula. Suffice it to say that recalling the ambassador is not sufficient reaction if the Saudis are serious about guarding against Togo, the Cook Islands, or any other such state calling them names.
Political insignificance is not relative to geographical size. Take Australia for example. If it weren’t for tennis, sheep, and kangaroos, no one would know or care what Australia is. Yet, they had to go one up on everyone else. They require Arabs to have a visa if they are on a plane that has to make a pit stop on their territory. Say you are flying from Fiji to Singapore and your flight makes a stop for an hour in Sydney to refuel. You don’t leave the plane nor do you even get to visit the duty free shops. Yet, if an Arab, you need a visa to sit in your aircraft while the thing is being refueled. The bitter fact for Australians, however, is that so few Arabs go to Australia that visas for GCC citizens, for example, are issued in Dubai only. Not exactly a favorite destination I should say.
May I suggest to the Arab nations that they require everything flying to Australia that over flies their land to require a visa? Better still, may we demand that every single Aussie lamb coming to our shores be hoof-printed? The point is obvious: Silly people do silly things. But there is danger in silliness and it should be stopped in its tracks.
Recalling ambassadors is a first step, but it is not enough. Power (military or economic) is there to be used. We see that in daily practice between nations. Those who shoot off their mouths or issue silly regulations should be made to pay and pay dearly. It is legitimate in today’s political scene and, I dare say, necessary.
Failing to do so would give the impression that we have something to hide, or, that we are indeed all terrorists. Take your pick.
