Hoon: Britain Not Anti-Semitic
by Justin Cohen - Feb 25
Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has insisted that fighting anti-Semitism is an “utmost priority” for the Labour government.
The announcement comes just three weeks after a report from the Community Security Trust showed a 42 per cent rise in attacks on British Jews.
Addressing the organisation’s annual dinner last Wednesday, Hoon said: “Anti-Semitism is not just an attack on the Jewish community. It is an affront to the whole of humanity. And it will only be defeated if the whole of civilised society stand together in defiance.”
Despite the recent publicity surrounding Ken Livingstone’s Nazi jibe, and the recent controversy over the Labour party’s election campaign posters, the 51-year-old politician claimed Britain was not anti-Semitic country.
However, he stated it remained a problem that must be addressed. He said: “It is of the utmost priority to this government.”
Referring to the recent comments made by the Mayor of London, Hoon received rapturous applause from the 1,300- strong gathering at the Grosvenor House hotel, when he reiterated the Prime Minister’s call for Livingstone to issue an immediate apology.
Sir Ian Blair, the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, also addressed the event, praising the work of the Community Security Trust. But he called on the organisation to reach out to other communities in London to help combat the threat of terrorism.
He said: “We are not complacent. It is inevitable that terrorists are planning to attack Britain.
“It is communities that defeat terrorism. It is communities that will give police and the secret services the information that will help us find the terrorists.”
He added: “We need to reach out to the other diasporas of London who feel as just as threatened as you do. We need to have your help to help our Sikh, Muslims and Christian friends to deal with that.”
The event, which was attended by Lord Levy and Uri Geller, was believed to be the largest Jewish gathering of the year to date.
CST chairman Gerald Ronson called on guests to help raise the £4.75m the organisation needs to operate.
