According to Lebanese media sources, Lebanese businessman and Hizbullah publishing executive Hajj Salah Ezzedine has declared bankruptcy. Ezzedine, from the town of Maaroub near the southern port city of Tyre, is the director of the Hizbullah-owned Dar Al-Hadi Publishing House, named in honor of Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s son Hadi, who was killed by Israeli soldiers in a gun battle in 1997.

Border residents to be compensated for damages from surveillance measures

CAIRO: Residents in Rafah and on the border with Gaza are to be compensated by the government for damage incurred while putting in place a new US surveillance system aimed at detecting tunnels.

Due to the introduction of the new surveillance system, which included the insertion of underground cameras and radar scanners along the 13 kilometers of the shared border, a large number of trees were uprooted.

Egyptian authorities are currently scoping the area to record the extent of the damage and compensate the residents to the tune of LE 150 per uprooted tree.

The reason compensation is being given for uprooted foliage as opposed to property damage is because of the lack of ownership of actual property for residents in Northern Sinai.

The Israeli navy opened fire on fishermen from the besieged Gaza Strip on Monday, causing one boat to burst into flames, the army said. Witnesses did not report any casualties

The boat was targeted off Beit Lahia in northern Gaza by the Israeli navy which enforces a blockade on the Palestinian territory and prevents fishermen from venturing more than five kilometres (3.5 miles) from shore.

An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed the navy opened fire at fishing boats after their crews ignored warning shots and orders to turn back. She said the Israeli navy helped put out the fire on the fishing boat.

Egyptian powerful Muslim Brotherhood group reported on Sunday that charity stalls established in Alexandria were attacked by government forces and at least two people have been detained

The stalls are part of the Islamic group’s efforts at giving lower income families the opportunity of purchasing school supplies for their children at reduced rates.

The annual event was interrupted across Egypt’s second largest city of Alexandria after the stalls were set up, the Brotherhood said in a statement published on their official website.

In an interview with Al-Amal newspaper to be published on Friday, former Intelligence Chief Johnny Abdo said that “Hezbollah had all the information provided by the Der Spiegel report two years prior to its publication.”

Abdo said, “All this comes at a time when we do not know where the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) has reached. We trust the tribunal, and we are waiting for its verdict, and we will adhere to it.”

He added that the opposition has access to information “more than anyone could imagine,” saying that it masters the art of intimidation.

Abdo said that the recent attacks on the STL and the Lebanese judiciary prove the extent of Syria and its allies’ fears of the tribunal, which he said has caused them to follow up closely on it.

“It seems as though they have vital information, which is pushing them to escalate the tone of their rhetoric, to doubt the STL and to slam Lebanese and international judges.”

Abdo commented on former International Investigative Commissioner Judge Serge Brammertz, saying he set a condition for continuing his mission on the case of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s assassination, which was to provide him with life-long protection after he received a large number of death threats during his mission.

“When he was not given any guarantees, Brammertz decided to discontinue with the case and wait for his term to expire,” Abdo said.

Jumblat: We Share Ayatollah Fadlallah's Political Views
Druze leader Walid Jumblat and Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah agreed on Wednesday that Israel continues to plan on creating internal divisions among the Lebanese, in particular between the Sunnis and Shiites.
Following a meeting at Fadlallah's residence in Haret Hreik in Beirut's southern suburbs, Jumblat said that he shared the same political views as Lebanon's top Shiite cleric on regional issues in light of "the gradual build up of the American-Israeli plan and the obstruction facing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process."

Within this context, he confirmed that the plan aims at "implementing division and disintegration through the Arab and Islamic world from Lebanon to Afghanistan."

On the internal Lebanese situation, Jumblat called for "going out of our little (political) debates," so it would be possible to "approve a new electoral law, to enter wider spaces such as the proportional representation, the implementation of the Taef Agreement as to form a parliament representing the various confessions."

About his recent political shift, Jumblat reiterated the fact that he is "still a part of the majority," however, "with a distinguished rhetoric."

He also described the concept of the truce between Lebanon and Israel as being "a frozen war status," saying "it is not an entrance to unilateral talks."
