TEHRAN (MNA) -- The Mehr News Agency conducted an interview with Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani on Sunday in which he elaborated on the foreign threats against the country and the Defense Ministry’s six strategies in response. Following is the text of the interview:

Q: What are the Defense Ministry’s strategies to defend the country against the current threats it is facing?

A: The activities of the Defense Ministry are organized within the framework of the security strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the formation of any strategy is naturally in accordance with the nature of the threat. When these threats increase, some changes occur in the structure of the ministry’s strategies. It is the duty of the Defense Ministry to identify the threats and provide the necessary equipment to confront them. So, the activities of the Defense Ministry should increase to pave the way for maximizing national strength. In the current situation, in which Iran is confronted with a number of regional and international threats, it seems natural to increase national strength.

Q: What is the role of the aforesaid threats in encouraging the Defense Ministry to realize self-sufficiency in the production of defense equipment?

A: Our experience of the eight-year imposed war indicates that during that period of time we experienced a lack of the necessary armaments. So, in the current situation, we should create some processes through which we can make optimal use of our required equipment. Along these lines, the Aerospace Industries Organization, the Defense Industries Organization, and the Electronic Industries Organization were formed, and each of these organizations have specific responsibilities to increase national strength through producing equipment.

Q: What are the strategic principles of the Defense Ministry for the future?

A: The Defense Ministry has six strategic principles to confront the threats. The Defense Ministry’s strategic principles are as follows:

(1) Self-sufficiency in weapons production: Producing military equipment is the main objective of the Defense Ministry, regarding weaponry strategy. That is to say, the ministry tries to produce equipment which can meet Iran’s security and defense requirements when needed.

(2) Modern Industrial Research and Development: In order to produce new equipment, we must develop our practical research. This task is being pursued by the Defense Industries Research and Educational Institute so that it may lead to the acquisition of technology to produce defense equipment.

(3) Preparation for a post-modern war: What is specifically considered by the military in the current situation is the production of military hardware for probable wars in the future. In the years since 2001, we have witnessed that post-modern wars have become operational. So, Iran’s defense and weapons strategy is aimed at producing military equipment which can respond in a post-modern war.

(4) Resisting surprise attacks: Our current defense strategy has discerned the potential for surprise attacks in the military behavior of certain countries. Therefore, strategic and security contingencies make it necessary for us to be sensitive toward the threats and to adopt measures in response to them.

(5) Mobilizing social forces: The Defense Ministry’s economic, planning, and structural support for the armed forces can pave the way for civil defense preparedness. That is to say, we have tried to create a process through which we can make use of popular resistance to threats through developing defense capabilities.

(6) Waging asymmetrical warfare: Whenever the enemy’s threats are very serious, we will use the equipment for asymmetrical warfare to limit and hinder the enemies’ offensive power.

Q: How can you assess the impact of the turnout in the upcoming presidential election in increasing the country’s deterrent strength?

A: The expansion of the United States military presence in the region is one of the threats challenging Iran at this point in time. Since the formation of George W. Bush’s new cabinet, the U.S. has taken measures in which one can detect signs of intensified threats. These threats have created much social tension in Iran. Along these lines, the Defense Ministry will try to increase the level of popular resistance.
