Wi-Fi in California Parks

Go anywhere today and you'll see someone with elbow bent and hand to ear. Cellphonophobia has gripped humankind like, some would say, a plague. Keeping in contact, even when unnecessary, has become a driving force to the cellular generation.

A nicer, and much quieter, way to keep in touch is the Internet with e-mail, instant messaging and digital photo sharing via laptop computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs like Palm Pilots and Blackberrys). Just as ubiquitous, but certainly quieter than jabber-inducing cell phones.

Now California, ever anxious to be on the leading edge of everything, has taken public communication in state parks way beyond the old outdoors pay phone. Believing vacationers should be able to keep in touch with family and friends, California State Parks and SBC Communications are taking "staying in touch" to an entirely new level by offering visitors high-speed wireless Internet access, also known as Wi-Fi, at the picnic tables, RV spaces and cabins of 85 California state parks. San Elijo State Beach is the first state park to offer SBC FreedomLink service, and over the next six months 84 other California state parks will offer Wi-Fi at 6,000 FreedomLink hot spots within the parks, making this the largest Wi-Fi deployment in any park system nationwide.

While staying at a California park, visitors with Wi-Fi enabled laptops can send e-mail and instant messages to family and friends, share digital pictures of their vacation and even obtain driving directions or locate hiking trails and nearby restaurants via the Internet.

Assuming, of course, they can put down the addictive little Macs, PCs and PDAs long enough to hike, bike, fish, swim and enjoy the traditional pastimes that brought them to the parks in the first place.

Hotels and resorts now offer more Wi-Fi hotspots than any other location, according to recent data released by JiWire, a Wi-Fi content and hotspot information source. Worldwide, over 16,000 hotels and resorts currently offer Wi-Fi access, up from 9,000 in August 2004, a 78% growth over the last six months. The United States, with more than 5,000 locations, has the most Wi-Fi hotels and resorts, followed by Germany and France. Within the United States, California has the most hotels with Wi-Fi access, followed by Texas and Florida.
