Reuters - Police recovered the stolen gold medal of Israel's only Olympic champion on Saturday after an intensive four-day search, Army Radio reported.
Gal Fridman, winner of the 2004 Athens Olympics Mistral windsurfing event had placed his gold medal and a bronze medal he won in the 1996 Atlanta Games in a safe at his parent's house in the town of Hadera in central Israel for safekeeping.
Fridman told Army Radio he had believed all along the medal would be found as there was little chance of it being sold and it was not worth melting down as the gold was worth no more than around $200.
"(Police) found the safe and said that many things are missing... but they (the thieves) didn't take the medal because they knew that there was not much they could do with it," Fridman said.
Thieves broke in on Tuesday night and chiselled the small safe containing the two medals out of a wall in a bedroom. They also took jewellery and a handgun belonging to Fridman's father.
