NATO Rules Out Israel As Member

(IsraelNN.com) NATO's secretary general said Thursday that there is no chance of Israel becoming a member of the 16-member alliance because of expected Arab hostility to the idea. Israel has expressed interest in joining NATO.

Jaap De Hoop Scheffer, during a visit to Israel, said NATO wants "an increased political and practical relation" with Israel but that it would not become involved in the peace process. He added that NATO would consider sending peacekeeping troops if a Middle East peace treaty is signed.
