256MB vs 512MB vs 1GB+

So exactly how much ram should your system have? Well, that all depends on what your going to be using it for. If your into encoding video/audio, doing creation/editing work like Photoshop, 3D Studio, Maya, AutoCAD, you get the idea, your going to want 1GB or more of Ram. If all your computer will be used for is Internet Surfing, E-Mail, Light Gaming, than you can get away with 256MB but multitasking will be slow and games will take much longer to load and you will have random spots in games where you'll notice a slight pause(Because you have a low amount of ram, Data is stored on the HD which is much slower). For now 512MB is sufficient for just about every task, but thats all starting to change now. If you are a heavy gamer and intend on building a system, you should really be looking at 1GB. If you currently have 512MB, and think your loosing alot in performance by not have 1GB, don't worry, it's not that bad. You can put that upgrade off a little bit longer. At this current point, more ram(1GB) will mostly help with making load times shorter and avoiding those little hiccups when the game needs to read from the Hard Disk. Here is a review(Not in English, but the Navigation on the bottom right is) that puts 512MB vs 1GB vs 2GB against various applications. Be cautious about the review though, while you may not see a performance boost from 512MB vs 1GB, you must keep in mind that newer games are now out that have a greater ram requirement. So in general, you can look at it this way... 256MB = Absolute Minimum, you'll notice some slow-downs while multitasking, and gaming. 512MB = Good enough for just about everything out now, if you already have 512MB but want your computer to go faster, you should look at buying something else like a new CPU or Video Card. 1GB = Perfect for now and for awhile to come, don't worry about upgrading. Anything past a gig is a waste unless you have a server or have dozens of memory intensive programs running at once.
