אם העסקה תצא לפועל, היא עתידה להיות העסקה הצבאית הגדולה ביותר של ממשלת הודו, על סך 420 מיליארד רופי (בערף 9 מיליארד דולר).
לחה"א ההודי יש כבר 4 טייסות מיג-29 ו 2 טייסות מיראז' 2000. לעומת זאת, לחה"א ההודי אין כל הכרות וניסיון עם המטוס השוודי.

NEW DELHI, Dec 3. — The Indian Air Force is looking to buy 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft in the next few years and three models are being considered: the French Mirage-2000, the Russian MiG-29 and the Swedish Grippen. This is likely to be one of the biggest defence deals the Indian government will sign in years to come as the 126 war-planes are likely to cost Rs 42,000 crore according to current estimates. Of course, the payments will be spread out over many years. The IAF already has two squadrons of the Mirage and four squadrons of the MiG-29 and is therefore familiar with both aircraft. But the Grippen is unknown in the sub-continent. The manufacturers will have to provide all the necessary information about the planes before the decision to buy a particular plane is taken and negotiations with the manufacturers begin. In January this year, the Defence Planning Board cleared, in principle, the decision to buy 126 fighters. The air staff requirements — or what is expected from the plane in terms of performance — were issued over six months ago. There were reports that the IAF was perhaps keen on the Mirage-2000. In fact, it is buying quite a few– 10 from France and 12 from Qatar. About 50-odd Mirages with the IAF will be upgraded and when that happen will depend on whether the 126 planes being purchased are Mirages. But the government is not particularly keen on single-vendor situations as this always leads to charges and counter-charges. If a number of vendors are involved, there will be no accusation of favouritism in the future. Meanwhile, about 60 MiG-29 fighters are also likely to be upgraded in the future. Special equipment is being considered for the mid-life upgrade.
