Israeli soldiers are seen on Lebanese territory near the southern village of Marwaheen, Lebanon, Wednesday Sept. 27, 2006. Although Israel has agreed to a cease-fire with Hezbollah and withdrawn its troops from Lebanese soil it has not fully completed the withdrawal yet, and U.N. peacekeepers have been deployed in the area to create a buffer zone aimed at cementing the cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah faces a major incursion as thousands of U.N. peacekeepers and Lebanese army troops pour into its southern stronghold, where the guerrilla group enjoyed unchallenged control for decades before this summer's war with Israel. Quote:
Sgt. Stephen Mercer, 23, a squad leader assigned to the Hawaii-Based Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, leads several Marines and Iraqi soldiers on a patrol during a census operation September 13 in Baghdadi, Iraq. The Marines and Iraqi soldiers recently completed the census operation dubbed “Operation Guardian Tiger IV” in the Euphrates River city of Baghdadi — a town of approximately 15,000. The local government and Iraqi Security Forces can now put names and faces to residents throughout this city in the western Al Anbar Province about 120 miles northwest of Baghdad. Upon completion of the mission, the Marines from the Hawaii-based Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment had an accurate census of the city’s population. The purpose of a census is to record the demographics of an area as well as the town’s population. It also provides employment statistics and the number of vehicles belonging to residents in the area, said Cpl. Austin Bridgewater, 22, a native of Richmond, Va., and an intelligence analyst assigned to the Hawaii-based 2d Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. Marines from 2d Battalion are slated to replace the Marines from 3rd Battalion, who are wrapping up their seven-month deployment to Iraq. The Marines and Iraqi Soldiers also spread word of opportunities to join the police and sent a message out to insurgents – “there is nowhere you can hide.” (Sgt. Roe F. Seigle )

Marines (Left to Right: Cpl. John Dial, Cpl. Alan Epps, Lance Cpl. Daniel Hardy and Cpl. John Ford) from 3rd Platoon, Company A, 2nd LAR Bn., stand by their vehicle at Combat Outpost Rawah, Iraq, Sept. 19, 2006 awaiting their orders for an upcoming patrol. The Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based 2nd LAR took control of the area from the Twentynine Palms, Calif.-based 3rd LAR on Sept. 21, 2006. Starting today, 2nd LAR, also known as “Mountaineer”, intends to capitalize on the successes of their West Coast counterparts, according to Marines here. “In order for us to do our job effectively, we’re going to need to build on the successes of 3rd LAR,” said Lt. Col. Austin E. Renforth, battalion commander for 2nd LAR. “In the short time that they’ve been here, they did a great job of setting us up to take it to the next level.” That “next level” is one critical to the overall mission that Coalition Forces face in Iraq. Ultimately, it will allow the areas of Iraq that Coalition Forces operate in to confidently turn over safe locations to Iraqi Security Forces. For 2nd LAR, it means putting more of the battalion’s Marines into cities like Rawah and Anah — a small town about 10 miles south of Rawah — to work with the Iraqi people. “Coming together with the Iraqi Security Forces is our number one priority. We need to be training and working side by side with them in order for our objective to be reached,” said Renforth. (Pfc. Nathaniel F. Sapp)
