"Helicopter brownouts are probably the most significant of all military operational concerns when landings are required in the desert environment. Brownout-related mishaps account for a significant number of incidents resulting in severe injury, loss of life and aircraft.In September a US Air Force Research Laboratory/Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency researcher, Major Peter Doty, briefed that since 1973 there are estimated to have been 21 MH-53 and 10 HH-60G brownout mishaps as pilots lost visual reference due to blowing dust and debris"









The US Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) at Fort Eustis, Virginia is validating an installation kit for the Brownout Situational Awareness Upgrade (BSAU) on the UH-60 Black Hawk. The BSAU is a ground velocity reference system meant to prevent landing mishaps in blowing dust (brownout) or snow (white-out) conditions. Brown-outs have been blamed for several helicopter mishaps in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, and production installations will depend upon requests from field commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan and subsequent funding.

The tips of the composite rotor blades on the VH-71, like those on its predecessors, are flared for aerodynamics and noise reduction. One unintended feature that will be useful on CSAR-X is the blade geometry raises a curtain, not the usual cloud of sand in low hover, eliminating brownout conditions and reducing sand ingestion by the engines and rotor wear.
