The new Buffalo Mines Detection Vehicle (BMDV) bought by the Canadian Forces (CF). The Buffalo is a vehicle from the Force Protection Industries of South Carolina (FPI). The order was placed by the US Navy on behalf of Canada Expeditionary Force Command (CEFCOM). Canada has order five FPI’s Buffalo blast-protected vehicles as part of a new “Expedient Route-Opening Capability” for EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) in Afghanistan. The Buffalo designs originate in South Africa. A major difference is in powertrain – the Force Protection types using drivetrains adapted from US commercial tucks. The larger Buffalo has only the rear door but its crew remains inside the vehicle during most operations. The hull of the Buffalo is mine-resistant, its armour (and ballistic glass) protected against IEDs and 7.62x51 mm rifle fire.
