ההצטיידות בכטב"ם החדש החלה בשנת 2005 , וכיום יש בשירות מבצעי בצבא הגרמני 6 מערכות KZO נ ( 60 כטב"מים , 12 תחנות קרקע), הכטב"ם מופעל בהצלחה רבה באפגניסטן על ידי הכוחות הגרמנים שם, ומספק מודעין חזותי לכוחות נאט"ו, ולכן הוחלט על שלב שני שיכלול רכש 5 מערכות חדשות (50 כטב"מים , 10 תחנות קרקע).
Bundeswehr receives additional KZO UAV systems
For almost four weeks, the battle-proven unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), such as the US Predator and Reaper or the French SIDM, (besides a large range of deployed mini UAVs) have been joined in the skies over Afghanistan by the German Armed Forces’ KZO (German abbreviation for “small aerial system for target localisation” . According to the Bundeswehr, the KZO has already been able to improve the operational picture for German troops in Afghanistan and has successfully carried out some 25 missions. So far, the Bundeswehr operates six KZO systems comprising two ground stations, five recovery systems and ten UAVs. On Wednesday, the German Army Reconnaissance received an additional five KZO systems from the Germany-based prime contractor, Rheinmetall Defence, in a hand-over ceremony at the Munster training area.
“Each additional reconnaissance platform improves the operational picture for the troops,” emphasised Colonel Georg Klein, the Commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Kunduz. “It contributed to making the operations of ISAF and of the Afghan security forces safer.”
According to the Bundeswehr, the KZO has become an inherent part of the ISAF operation and provides crucial information, along with further reconnaissance abilities such as the Luna UAV. In addition to its greater range, the KZO is also equipped with an enhanced sensor kit which enables it to cover the infra-red spectrum. This allows precise target localisation, situation assessment and post-strike damage analysis during day, as well as night operations. “With the KZO we are able to more rapidly collect a larger amount of information, to analyse it and to directly introduce it into operation planning and execution,” says Klein.
Almost noiseless and imperceptible
After a setup time of only 45 minutes, the UAV is ready for take-off. Being based on a mobile take-off platform, it can be transferred to any place where it is required and can be employed in all weather conditions. The propeller-driven KZO is launched with the help of a solid fuel rocket. As soon as it is in the air, it transmits aerial images and reconnaissance data in real-time to a ground station.
The KZO can operate according to a pre-programmed flight path, as well as by remote-control. It can fly at heights from 300 metre (984 feet) to 3.500 metre (11483 feet) and can stay aloft for approximately 5.5 hours. The KZO’s sensors can detect stationery as well as moving targets up to a range of 100 kilometres, even in the presence of strong electromagnetic interferences. While in the air, the UAV operates almost invisibly. Due to its almost noiseless propeller, its light construction, and its small dimensions – a wingspan of 3.42 metres, a length of 2.26 metres and a fuselage diameter of only 36 cm – it is difficult to be detected with the naked eye.
A new key asset of Bundeswehr reconnaissance capabilities
As Klein explains, “A KZO system consists of a ground control station, an antenna vehicle, a launch vehicle, a recovery vehicle and five UAVs.” Currently, three such systems have been deployed to the PRT Kunduz in Afghanistan. The system is being operated by a reinforced KZO platoon consisting of almost 30 soldiers who are responsible for the maintenance and supply as well as for the operation of the system. They assure that the KZO is readied for take-off only a few hours after its last mission in order to be able to provide new reconnaissance information for ongoing operations, if required.
Besides the results of the KZO missions, the German Armed Forces deployed in Afghanistan receives reconnaissance data from the Luna, Aladin and Mikado UAVs, as well as from the Fennek light armoured reconnaissance vehicle.
