The "Big Aliah" – the Jewish immigration from China to Israel started in the year 1949 after Israel had become an independent state in May 1948. The immigration slowed down in 1952 and a slower stream of Olim (immigrants continued till 1963 when the old communities for all intent and purpose ceased to exist).
The first ones to depart were the DPs- Displaced Persons and Beitar members
The immigration from China to Israel followed two main routes: Those from Shanghai traveled by sea, Their voyage nearly circled the world. There were three direct sailings from Shanghai to Haifa, two on the “Wooster Victory” and one on the “Anna Salen”.
"Wooster Victory" first sailed from Shanghai on December 1948 and after a voyage of two months via Cape town docked in Haifa on February 1949 .
Most of the passengers on this ship were Jews from Shanghai and young Pioneers from Harbin who had to make their way to Shanghai from Harbin in order to board the first ship sailing to the just established Jewish State.
The second sea voyage took place on October 1949 also via Cape Town, whilst Anna Salen sailed via the Panama Canal in 1950.
In addition to the Wooster Victory and Anna Salem were other indirect sailings from Shanghai to Haifa. Those journeys required transfers at several transit ports. Eventually the immigrants arrived in Haifa from Italy on Israeli vessels.
More or less concurrently, the main immigration from Harbin started.
Immigrants from Harbin used several means of transport:. First, 48 hours by train to Tientsin, and then five days of sailing to Hong Kong aboard the ” Heinrick Jessen", a Danish Cargo ship converted to carry refugees and finally a 36 hour flight, with stopovers in various countries, to Lod Airport in Israel. This lengthy form of transport was used several times.
