The king of the beasts took a bite out of a king-sized idiot who climbed into a lions' den yesterday at the Taipei Zoo.
Why did he climb into a pit with two lions?
Because 46-year-old Chen Chung-ho wanted to convert the animals to Christianity, witnesses said.
"Jesus will save you!" Chung-ho shouted at the lions, who were lounging under a tree.
Video taken by a cable TV station had captured every harebrained move as Chung-ho jumped a fence and approached the man-eaters with his hands raised.
"Come bite me!" he yelled as one lion stood up, shaking his shaggy mane and flashing his sharp teeth.
A frightened onlooker shouted, "Come out or you will die!" but Chung-ho ignored the warning, removing his jacket and taunting the lions like a bullfighter.
That was all one lion could take.
Although it had just been fed, it chomped on Chung-ho's right leg.
The proselytizer fell back on a stone ridge as the lion jumped on him and bit his arm. The other cat, a lioness, stood by watching the bizarre incident unfold.
Zoo guards and veterinarians rushed to the rescue, shooing the animals away from Chung-ho with a water cannon and tranquilizer darts.
Chung-ho walked out of the lions' den with relatively minor injuries, officials said, but major mental problems.
"He had bite marks both at the front and back of his leg," Dr. Wang Yao-ching said, while psychiatrist Teng Hui-wen, after examining Chung-ho, concluded he wasn't right in the head.
"He took this dangerous action today because he imagined he heard voices," Hui-wen said. With News Wire Services
