Initially, this flying laboratory was created on "long-term high-speed helicopter" (PSV), the main element of the test in this laboratory was to become the testing of new rotor blades. However, as the recently publishedmaterials, "according to the results of consideration by the Scientific and Technical Council holding "Helicopters of Russia", it was concluded that at the current level of technological advance in this field is impossible to achieve research results "Development and creation of long-term high-speed helicopter" set the terms of reference, a target date. The reasons for breach of a state contract awarded impossibility reaching high cruising speed helicopter without significantly increasing the cost of operation, resulting in the simultaneous implementation of all the requirements specification is not possible with the current state of technology. It was deemed expedient obtained results used to continue research on the creation of a new support system of the helicopter, designed for cruising speed of more than 350 km / h to complete the development of the helicopter engine VC-2500M applicable including re-engine the existing fleet of Mi-8/17.As a result of the research work on the theme "Development and creation of long-term high-speed helicopter" in September 2014 has been discontinued. Nevertheless, in 2015 within the framework of a technology platform "Air mobility and aviation technologies" for the development of advanced helicopters expected to conduct scientific research and experimental work aimed at improving the performance characteristics of helicopters flying at speeds up to 400 km / h. Planned creation of a flying laboratory for the modernization of existing and development of new advanced helicopters. For these purposes from the federal budget allocated 630 million rubles., Extra-budgetary funding is not provided. As expected results defined holding bench and flight tests of specimens and units of the support system in a flying laboratory. "

SU-30SE

Su-30SM fighters, which are part of Russia’s anti-ISIL campaign in Syria, are armed with R-73 short-range and R-27R medium-to-long-range air-to-air missiles, representatives of the Russian Air Force told journalists at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia.
The Russian airstrike group in Syria includes Sukhoi Su-24s, Su-25s and Su-34s, as well as several Su-30SM fighters. The main objective of these fighter jets is to protect Russian bombers, striking ISIL positions in the air, from possible enemy fighters.

For this purpose the Sukhoi fighter jets are armed with R-73 and R-27R (and its modification R-27ER) air-to-air missiles. Each plane can carry 12 of these deadly missiles, but usually Russian fighters carry six of them for greater maneuverability.

The R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles are designed for close-range aerial combat, with a range of no more than 30 kilometers. The R-73 missile is equipped with an infrared-homing (heat-seeking) head that provides extreme precision when hitting targets. Pilots can fire R-73 missiles using a helmet-mounted sight (HMS) system of targeting

R-73

In addition to the short-range missiles, Su-30SM flankers are equipped with R-27R and R-27ER medium-to-long-range missiles. The R-27R and R-27ER missiles can be used between 20 and 27,000 meters altitude and are equipped with an active-radar-homing head that allows the missile to find and track its targets autonomously. Active-radar-homing missiles are extremely accurate and have one of the best kill probabilities among all modern air-to-air missiles

Russia’s Radio-Technical Troops will soon deploy radar units capable of detecting targets 1,500 kilometers away, the RTF’s deputy commander said in a radio interview on Saturday.“We already have radar units which can “see” targets 1,200 kilometers away and 150 kilometers high. We now want to have ones to detect targets 1,500 kilometers away and up to 600 kilometers above. In fact, we already have such units available to us,” Colonel Vladimir Filippovich told Echo Moskvy radio on Saturday.

The Radio-Technical Troops (RTT) is a subdivision of the Russian Air Force.

Their objective is to carry out radar reconnaissance of enemies in the air and report radar information to the command-and-control elements of the Air Force and parts of the Russian Armed Forces.

On August 1, 2015, the Russian Air Force, along with the Aerospace Defense Forces and the Air Defense Troops, was merged into a new branch of the Armed Forces – the Russian Aerospace Forces commanded by Col.-Gen. Viktor Bondarev.

The basic unguided S-25 rocket is designed to self stabilise by rotating about its axis at 600 RPM, using canted tail fins to impart the rotation. This weapon achieved IOC with the FA-VVS in 1979. A 150 kg penetrator warhead is used with a 21 kg shaped charge precursor warhead.

The guided variants retain this arrangement, with the seeker section on the nose attached the weapon fuselage by a low friction bearing, decoupling the seeker from the fuselage rotation.

Two basic variants exist, the S-25L and improved S-25LD, both with the KBT 24N1 gimballed semiactive laser homing seeker used in a number of other weapons

Russia grounds MiG-31 fleet following crash

Russia's fleet of MiG-31 interceptors are expected to remain grounded for no more than a few days
while authorities seek to determine the cause of a recent crash. Source: Russian Air Force

The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) grounded its fleet of MiG-31 'Foxhound' interceptors on 25 January following the loss of an aircraft in the central region of the country the day before, state media reported.

All of the VKS's approximately 200 MiG-31s are covered by the order, while the service seeks to determine the cause of the crash that happened during a training exercise in the Central Military District Air Force and Air Defense region, close to the town of Kansk.

Both crew members survived the accident, with the TASS news agency quoting a senior VKS source as saying that a technical malfunction was the most likely cause.

It is standard practice for the VKS (formerly VVS) to ground aircraft fleets following an accident such as this, and these flight suspensions rarely last for more than a few days.

COMMENT

Although a relatively old aircraft compared with the VKS's post-Soviet fleets of Su-30 and Su-34 platforms, the MiG-31 remains the backbone Russia's air defence capability.

Despite a number of crashes over recent years, the MiG-31 is still a highly potent long-range interceptor, thanks largely to its NIIP N007 S-800 SBI-16 (RP-31) Zaslon or Zaslon-A electronically scanned, phased-array fire-control radar (NATO codename 'Flash Dance'). This radar affords the aircraft an impressive beyond-visual-range capability, enabling it to see airborne targets out to a range of 108 n miles (200 km; 124 miles) in a clutter-free forward sector, or 48 n miles (90 km; 56 miles) to the rear. It is capable of tracking 10 targets and attacking four simultaneously.

That the VKS is upgrading 130 of its fleet to the advanced MiG-31BM standard demonstrates the faith that the service still holds in the 1980s-vintage platform but that said, plans have already been drawn up for its eventual replacement. Developed of this successor is expected to begin at about the turn of the decade, to enter service in about 2028.

Russian PAK-FA fighter jet

Russian fifth generation fighter aircraft, PAK-FA is set to complete government tests in 2016 and will start regular production in 2017.

“The eleventh T-50 aircraft is on berth and is 60-70 per cent ready. This aircraft is going to be the final one in the test series,” Air Force Commander-in-Chief Viktor Bondarev said to Ria Novosti news agency, adding he is 100 per cent sure the jets will pass government testing by the end of 2016.

“Next year the aircraft goes into serial production,”Bindarev said.

RT news quoted Bondarev as saying that the PAK-FA’s operational engine will be ready for testing next year and is likely to go into production in 2018. At the moment, the PAK-FA is powered with two AL-41F1 engines which enable it to fly at a supersonic cruise speed, have a 2,600 km/h top speed, and a range of 5,500 kilometers (with two drop tanks).

The next-stage engine, currently dubbed ‘Type 30,’ is expected to have better speed and fuel economy characteristics.

Take Note, Turkey: Russia's New Su-35S Arrives in Syria

Dave Majumdar February 1, 2016

Russia has deployed at least four advanced Sukhoi Su-35S Flanker-E aircraft to Syria, beefing up its air superiority capabilities in the war-torn region.

The move follows protests from Turkey that a Russian Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback bomber violated its airspace on Friday—a claim Moscow denies. In an earlier incident in November, Ankara shot down a Russia Su-24 Fencer that had crossed the Turkish border for about eighteen seconds. Following that incident, Moscow deployed the power S-400 air and missile defense system to Syria and started to arm its fighters with live air-to-air missiles.

“Starting from last week, super-maneuverable Su-35S fighter jets started performing combat missions at Khmeimim airbase," Russian defense ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told the TASS news agency on February 1.

The addition of the Su-35 provides Russia with more fighter escorts for its fleet of Su-24 Fencer and Su-25 Frogfoot strike aircraft that are operating from the Khmeimim air base, which is located in Syria’s northwestern Latakia province. Those aircraft have minimal air-to-air self-defense capability and are reliant on the Sukhoi Su-30SM and Su-27SM3 Flankers currently in theatre for protection. Russia has also deployed fourteen Su-34 Fullback bombers to Syria, but those warplanes have a significant air-to-air self-defense capability.

It’s not clear how many air superiority aircraft Russia currently has deployed to Syria. Prior to the arrival of the Su-35s, the most capable Russian air superiority fighters in the region were four Su-30SM Flanker-H aircraft. Indeed, while not quite as sprightly due to their greater weight, drag, less powerful engines and somewhat less capable avionics, the Su-30SM is nonetheless an overall more capable system compared to the Su-35 due to the presence of a second crew member. The addition of the weapons system officer helps to ease crew workload during complex air operations.

While there are four Su-30SMs at Latakia, Russia has not disclosed how many Su-27SM3 aircraft are present in Syria. The Russian defense ministry has generally described the number alternatively as a “flight” or squadron, but it has not given a precise number. Nonetheless, the upgraded Su-27SM3 is a formidable warplane—roughly comparable to an upgraded Boeing F-15C Eagle.

While the Su-30SM and Su-27SM3 are capable warplanes, the Su-35 incorporates the latest Russian technology. Overall, U.S. defense officials are quite impressed with this latest Flanker variant. “It’s a great airplane and very dangerous, especially if they make a lot of them,” one senior U.S. military official with extensive experience on fifth-generation fighters told me some time ago. “I think even an AESA [active electronically scanned array-radar equipped F-15C] Eagle and [Boeing F/A-18E/F] Super Hornet would both have their hands full.”

The Syrian deployment will allow the Russian air force to gain valuable operational experience on the Su-35—even if four warplanes don’t add a decisive material value to the fight. Deploying the Su-35 to Syria also serves as a marketing tool for the formidable warplane. Moscow has sold the jet to China and hopes to secure further orders for the new fighter. Demonstrated combat experience in Syria should help with that goal.

Indonesia considers buying 10 super maneuverable Su-35 fighter jets, preferring them

Indonesia
considers buying 10 super maneuverable Su-35 fighter jets, preferring them to US and German aircraft.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Indonesia's Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu confirmed that the Indonesian government intends to buy 10 Russian Su-35 (NATO reporting name Flanker-E) multirole fighters, Indonesian media reported Wednesday.

"The purchase of the fighters must be done smartly, starting with a few, as purchasing everything at once means it will be delivered five or ten years down the line anyway," Ryacudu said, as quoted by the Kompas daily newspaper.

In late January, the defense minister announced plans to visit Russia in April in order to continue discussions on the procurement of the fighters. Ryacudu first announced Jakarta’s intention to purchase the aircraft to replace the country's aging fleet of US-made Northrop F-5 Tiger II fighters in September, 2015.

The minister may now visit Moscow to discuss the purchase as early as late February or March, according to the report. Indonesia is set to purchase the aircraft in a bundle with armaments and avionics systems, the newspaper said, adding that the Su-35 was chosen over its competitors, such as the US-made F-16V and the German-made Eurofighter Typhoon.

In October 2015, the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade reported that Western companies had intensified their efforts to persuade Indonesia to purchase their aircraft following Ryacudu's September announcement.

The super maneuverable Su-35 fighter was developed by Russia's Sukhoi Company aircraft manufacturer between 2003-2008. It was first introduced to a foreign audience at the 2013 Paris Air Show as a "4++ generation" heavily-upgraded derivative of the Su-27 multirole fighter.

Russian Helicopters released this photograph when it announced that the dual-control variant of the Mi-28NE had entered mass production.
This implies it is one of the helicopters being built for Algeria Source: Russian Helicopters

The Mil Mi-28NE Night Hunter attack helicopters that Algeria has ordered will have dual controls; the Interfax news agency cited a source in Russia's arms export structures as saying on 18 March.

The source said the dual-control variant had been specifically developed for Algeria and that the North African country has ordered about 40 Mi-28NEs. The Russian media has previously reported that Algeria ordered 42 Mi-28NE attack helicopters.
Russian Helicopters announced on 16 March that its Rostvertol plant had begun mass production of dual-control Mi-28NEs but did not identify the customer.

It said all the controls are duplicated in the new version, meaning both crew members can operate the weapon and countermeasures, as well as fly the helicopter.

Journalists were shown a Mi-28NE with dual controls when they visited Rostvertol plant on 16 March. On that day the TASS news agency quoted Rostvetol's deputy managing director Vadim Barannikov as saying that the Russian Ministry of Defence was expected to order a dual-control Mi-28UB training variant in the near future that will be similar to the dual-control Mi-28NE export version.

Algeria will be the third Mi-28N operator after Iraq and Russia. Barannikov said "two or three" other countries are currently in negotiations to buy the attack helicopter and that the new dual-control version should help attract more customers.
