Residents of Georgia's 6th congressional district—a generally affluent area that includes Atlanta's northern suburbs—are voting Tuesday to decide who will replace former Republican Rep. Tom Price in Congress. (Price vacated his seat to become Donald Trump's secretary of health and human services and to maybe get prosecuted for stock-related corruption.) The ol' Fightin' 6th has been held by Republicans—including former House speaker Newt "Snoot" Gingrich—since 1979, but the Republican Party and its president are currently unpopular enough that 30-year-old Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff actually has a slight polling lead over Republican candidate Karen Handel going into Tuesday's vote. Ossoff got the most votes in an open election for the seat that was held on April 18, but didn't reach the 50 percent total that would have been required to win the race outright. So now he and Handel are in a runoff.

How much money has been spent on this single congressional race while the United States remains trillions of dollars in debt and millions of its citizens suffer in poverty?

An estimated $50 million, making it what the AP describes as the most expensive House race in history. That's not much less than was spent by all parties and candidates combined in the U.K. elections held two years ago. (This year's totals aren't yet available.) The United Kingdom is about 93 times as big, population-wise, as the Georgia 6th.

Anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour announced her support on Thursday morning for Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff, who was paid an undisclosed amount of money last year by Qatari-owned network Al Jazeera.

Sarsour, who has called Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "waste of a human being" and celebrated violence against the Jewish state, wrote that she can't wait to call Ossoff a congressman.

Financial disclosure forms required of congressional candidates showed that Ossoff received an amount of money in excess of $5,000 from Al Jazeera in 2016. Ossoff has yet to disclose exactly how much the network paid him.

Al Jazeera is widely viewed as a propaganda outlet for Qatar, which funds the outlet and also terrorist organizations such as Hamas, al Qaeda, and ISIS.

Sarsour said in 2003 that her "Arab pride was hurt" when the United States caught former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, a war criminal who used chemical weapons against enemies.

Sarsour, however, celebrated Hussein for aiding the Palestinians.

"I think he's done a lot of things he shouldn't have done, but I was hurt," Sarsour told Newsday after Hussein's capture. "My Arab pride was hurt. Palestinians are under so much oppression and no other Arab country ever helped them."

The heaviest rain across Georgia's 6th District tapered off Tuesday afternoon

More than a month's rain fell in a matter of hours in some places — especially Democratic-leaning areas of the district.

At DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, which sits in the state's 5th District but is close to a heavily Democratic part of the 6th District, 4.8 inches of rain fell between noon and 6 p.m. Eastern Time. Over the past 30 years, the average rainfall for the entire month of June in the Atlanta area is 3.95 inches.

But in Cobb County, home to more Republican voters, far less rain has fallen. As of 6 p.m. at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, just 0.95 inches of rain had fallen.

Message from Georgia: Hating Trump is not a platform

Democrats pulled out all stops in their effort to show that the #Resistance isn’t just about marches and slogans and insulting the president, but also about flipping the House in 2018. They poured tens of millions of dollars into what became the most expensive House race ever, trying to elect 30-year-old nonentity Jon Ossoff to fill the seat of HHS head Tom Price. They cast the race as a referendum on Donald Trump, and a bellwether for 2018. Republicans will be elated with the outcome, and hopeful that both those claims are true.

What is undoubtedly true is this: despising Donald Trump is not much of a platform.

Ossoff, who received gobs of money from outside Georgia and doesn’t even live in the 6th District, started his campaign by exhorting voters to “Make Trump Furious.” But more recently he backed off that attack line, and ran what even the New York Times called a “milquetoast” campaign. He portrayed himself as a centrist, with a platform about as thin as his resume. Apparently he came to realize that those activists sending contributions from LA and New York would not be showing up in the voting booth, and that he had to win the hearts and minds of Georgia Republicans
