Hello nec_000,
Let me put all humor, sarkasm, and irony aside for a moment.

I think you deserve a counter argument to your proposal for going on an opportunistic war in lebanon.
In my post above there are two examples, the Sinai war of 1956 and the lebanon war of 1982-2000.
Examples are good, but they are not a complete argument.
I have to admit that I am not good enough to make that argument.
I lack the historical knowledge, and the writing skills to make the post good enough.

But I think I did find a way to reply in the form of a documentry about Robert S. McNamara.
McNamara had decades of experience, was CEO of Ford, US secretary of defence, and president of the World Bank.
It is a complex picture. To name a few cases, he shares responsibility for:
- The firebombing of Tokyo,
- MAD (possibly avoiding a nuclear war), and
- The Vietnam war (one result of MAD).
I hope you would agree that he knew enough to speak about strategic decisions (and game theory).

In the movie Mcnamara describes his life and career,
Including the WW2, Ford, the Cuba missile crysis, creation of MAD, and of course the Vietnam war (and more).
McNamara speaks like an engineer, analyzing decisions and their consequences.
He takes responsibility. Mostly he does not shy away.

The whole movie is relevant for our discussion but the decision to commit to the war in Vietnam is most related.
