From there, the unified forces aim to push through to the capital Damascus, about 45 miles away, Mr. Golani said in a Skype interview. He added that there were no plans to target Israel. There has been no cross-border violence between the rebels and Israel since the latest offensive began.

"The FSA and Nusra Front are closely cooperating on the front line," Mr. Golani said Wednesday, adding that the FSA had tried for a year to liberate the hills with no success until Nusra joined the fight.
