However, perhaps the most significant item of new equipment on the MRA4 will be the Israeli Elta EL/L-8300UK Electronic Support Measures (ESM) suite – which in reality is more of an ELINT system than anything else. מערכת ל"א פאסיבית היא כלי טוב להפללת מטרות- לדוגמא : אתה יודע שיש לך איושהי מטרה במכ"מ, אבל אתה לא יודע מה היא.
יש כמה דרכים לגלות זאת:
א.גילוי ויזואלי(ע"י אמצעי אופטי כלשהו או ע"י העין) - מה שיכניס כנראה את המטוס לטווח טילי הנ"מ של המטרה המזוהה
ב.ל"א פאסיבי- זיהוי המכ"מ המופעל על ידי המטרה, איפיון המטרה על ידי הזיהוי הזה.
ג. מכ"מ SAR
היתרון של ל"א פאסיבי הוא טווח הגילוי- בגלל צורת התפשטות גלים של המכ"מ, ל"א פאסיבי יאתר את אות המכ"מ הרבה יותר מוקדם מאשר המכ"מ יגלה את הפלטפורמה הנושאת את הל"א הפאסיבי.
-לא בהכרח צריך להפעיל אמצעי כנגד המכ"מ עצמו- ברגע שיש לך מטרה ואת יודע שהיא מפעילה מכ"מ שמאופיין כמכ"מ אוייב אפשר לשגר על המטרה כל דבר - טילי הארפון, פצצות מונחות, טילים מונחים, אפשר להכווין לעברו מטוסים, ספינות, וכו' וכד' .
חוץ מזה ל"א פאסיבי טוב זה בסיס להפעלת ל"א אקטיבי.

מעניין למה הבריטים בחרו במטוס סילון לצורך סיור, כאשר עמיתיהם האמריקאיים והצרפתים משתמשים בפרופ או בטורבו פרופ.

את ה P-3 Orion יחליף דגם סיור של ה 737. מלבד האוריון, ההוקאיי וה"אטלנטיק" הצרפתי לא עולות לי כרגע יותר מדי דוגמאות למטוסי סיור בקטגורית הגודל/משקל הזו בעלי הנעת טורבו-פרופ (שאגב קרובה הרבה יותר לסילון מאשר לבוכנה [אני מניח שזו הייתה הכוונה שלך ב "פרופ"]), ככה שלא מדובר באיזו מגמה רצינית.

בקשר לנימרוד- למי שלא ידע המטוס מבוסס על מטוס הנוסעים "קומט", מטוס הנוסעים הסילוני הראשון בעולם, אי שם משנות הארבעים, שדגמיו הראשונים היו ידועים כבעלי בטיחות נמוכה במיוחד....
