Norwegians Confused By Bush Family's "Satanic" Salute

President Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.

That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.

"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.

For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.

Bush, a former Texas governor, and his family made the sign to greet the Longhorn marching band as it passed during the inaugural parade through Washington during Thursday's festivities, Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang, explained to its readers.

The Inaugural Parade float of the High School Pirate Band from Crawford, Texas, where the president has a vacation ranch. The cost of the flight $ 48,000... Inauguration Parade Includes Texas Bands, Rangerettes and Horse Cavalry. The Crawford High School Pirate Band anchored the first division of the parade aboard a float that was unmistakably Texan. The 26 members of the CrawfordHigh School band and their 10 sponsors boarded a bus Tuesday afternoon for a trip to Austin to board a flight to Washington, D.C. The band got a boost over the weekend from resident rocker Ted Nugent who put on a benefit concert in the CrawfordHigh School gym to help raise money to cover the $ 48,000 it’s expected to cost to send the musicians and ten sponsors to the capital. The small high school in the President’s adopted hometown was represented in the inaugural parade in 2001 when the Crawford band played along the parade route and boy scouts from Crawford rode on a float.

Some shuddered at the protesters' shouts and scrapped or shortened their festivities.

And some said that although they'd traveled across the country, the chaotic combination led them to settle for a view of the inauguration from in front of a TV.

"It was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw in my life," said Rob Miller, 38, a Bush supporter from Orangeburg, S.C., sporting a big, black Stetson while standing in line yesterday at Dulles International Airport. "It got to be so much you couldn't enjoy it. We had great seats for the inauguration -- in the red zone -- but we could never even get there because of the lines."
