LEADER OF MOSQUE 'COERCED INTO SEX'

A religious leader, accused of raping a woman in his flat in a Scunthorpe Mosque, claimed he was coerced into sex after the woman stripped naked and threatened to scream if they did not have intercourse, a jury heard. Caroline Bradley, prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court, said Ahmed Niaz (48), of the Scunthorpe Pakistan Islamic Mosque on Parkinson Avenue, committed the offence on July 28, 2002.
The woman, described by Miss Bradley as 'a fairly vulnerable 38-year-old', was staying with a friend in Scunthorpe. She did not know the area very well and, on the day in question, she paused in order to get her bearings.
Niaz, who was the leader of the Mosque at that time, was sitting on a wall outside the building. He spoke to her and invited her in for a cold drink.
She went into the Mosque and he took her to the kitchen, where he gave her a glass of lemonade. "He then told her to hurry up her drink. That was the first impression she got he was quite domineering," Miss Bradley said.
Niaz gave her a cigarette and then told her to follow him upstairs. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told jurors she 'freaked out a bit' but did as he ordered.
The alleged victim said Niaz unlocked the door to his accommodation and then locked the door behind them both. "I just froze," she said.
She told the court she had fallen over earlier that day and Niaz touched her injured knee. And, she claimed: "He then told me to get undressed. I just did what he said because I was scared. He just said take your clothes off."
In reply to a question from Miss Bradley, the woman said she did not want to remove her clothing but did as she was bid. "He was domineering me," she stated.
She said Niaz then undressed and ordered her to lie on a pink rug on the floor, where he raped her. He later told her to get dressed and showed her out of the building.
She contacted police and Niaz was subsequently arrested and interviewed over the allegation. "After caution, his reply was 'never seen lady'," Miss Bradley said, adding he maintained that was the case throughout the interview.
He was released on bail, pending the outcome of forensic tests. But, she said, he failed to answer his bail and he was not arrested until September 2004, by which time his DNA had been matched to a sample taken from the complainant.
He was interviewed again and he told officers he had consensual sex with the woman. He, however, claimed it was 'under duress'. He alleged: "As soon as she went into the room she removed all her clothes and made advances towards him.
"He said she put her fingers in her ears and threatened to scream if he did not have intercourse with her," said Miss Bradley.
He admitted lying in the first interview. "He said he was an Imam in Scunthorpe and he wanted to protect his respect," she said.
Niaz, who denies a rape charge, also denies he indecently assaulted a teenage girl in a hairdressing salon in September 2002.
The trial continues.
