JOHANNESBURG -- Health authorities in South Africa plan to have all alcohol products labeled with health warnings in a bid to make the public more informed about potential risks of alcohol consumption.

The Health Department on Monday asked the liquor industry and the public to comment on draft regulations on labeling alcoholic beverages, which was published last week.

The regulations define an alcoholic beverage as any drink for human consumption with an ethyl alcohol content of above 1 percent. The regulations propose a number of messages that should be printed in black and white covering at least 12.5 percent of the container label or promotional material of an alcohol product.

The proposed health messages include: Excessive consumption of alcohol can cause brain damage and death; Alcohol abuse is a major cause of domestic violence; Alcohol abuse can cause liver damage and brain disease; Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can damage your baby; and Alcohol consumption can cause violent and aggressive behavior.

The regulations also prohibit any claims of health benefits that may be derived from consumption of an alcoholic beverage. Contravention of the regulations can lead to a fine, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, said the health department.

Although there are no immediate statistics on alcohol-related health damages in South Africa, the country's wine-growing Western Cape province was reportedly having the highest prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) worldwide, according to the official website of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

FAS is caused by maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and is one of the leading causes of preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities, the CDC said. Many of an estimated 15, 000 deaths on South Africa 's roads in 2004, or an average toll of 42 fatalities a day, were believed to be caused by drunk driving, particularly during festive seasons.

אכן ראוי לשים תווית אזהרה על בקבוקי האלכוהול,וחבל שלא עושים את זה גם בארץ. הסכנה שבאלכוהול היא בריאותית נטו (נזק מצטבר לכבד) והסכנה היותר גדולה היא אובדן שיקול הדעת אחרי שתיה.
אבל מוזר שדווקא בדרום אפריקה החליטו את זה. במדינה הזאת יש בעיה הרבה יותר חמורה מאלכוהול,ואני מדברת כמובן על מגיפת האיידס.
