Eid is a very important celebration throughout the Muslim world. One of the pillars of Islam is the Zakat, a generous tradition that sees the more wealthy members of the community give a portion of their savings to help ease poverty. In recognition of Islamic tradition, the gifts of goodwill are a present for our neighbours at this special time of the year.

Through the relationships built between Civil-Military Cooperation Teams and local community leaders, the local leaders helped to identify the people most in need of this support. The gifts of goodwill distributed to the local people included a winter headscarf for women, a 25kg bag of flour, a 5kg bag of rice, a 5kg bag of sugar, a 3L bottle of oil, and a 500g box of tea for each family.

Joint Task Force Afghanistan (JTF-Afg) is Canada’s military contribution to Afghanistan. Canadian operations will focus on working with Afghan authorities to improve security, governance and economic development in the country.

The Canadian Forces (CF) contribution in Afghanistan comprises over 2,500 soldiers, most of whom serve with JTF-Afg at Kandahar Airfield and Camp Nathan Smith, Canada’s Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), in Kandahar City. The Canadian Halifax-class Patrol Frigate HMCS Ville de Québec is currently deployed for the region of Somalia for the next month to conduct naval escorts of World Food Program (WFP) ships carrying life-saving supplies to the area. The government is acting on a extension request from the UN World Food Program and UN International Maritime Organization.

The WFP is urgently buying food for Somalia, of which eighty percent arrives by sea.

On July 17, HMCS Ville de Québec was originally deployed on Operation SEXTANT – Canada’s maritime contribution to the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1). With this new Humanitarian Assistance task, HMCS Ville de Québec has now been under command to Operation ALTAIR for about 6 weeks in direct support of WFP shipments to Somalia. Today’s patrol is a visit to the University of Kandahar with all three lead agencies working on the project – the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), and Specialist Engineering Team (SET). CIDA’s KLIP fund (Kandahar Local Initiatives Programme) is providing $480,000 in funding to the university to build infrastructure (a wall) and capability (improved equipment and hands-on training for the engineering faculty, who are assisting the contractor to build the wall).

The wall will increase security on the campus, vital for allowing increased attendance by women, and prevent squatters from occupying more of the university’s land (currently a big issue). SET was there today primarily to check in on the construction of the wall. CIMIC and CIDA were there to meet with Engineer Roshaan Wolusmal, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, who showed their existing inventory of survey and soil testing equipment, as well as the room which will soon host a computer lab for the students to analyze the data collected on their instruments.
