AMMAN - Jordan has promised its support to help revive the stalled Middle East peace process, PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas said during a visit to Amman on Monday.

"We need Jordan's support... as much as Jordan can offer,"
Abbas told reporters after meeting Jordanian Prime Minister Faisal al-Fayez.
The visit by Abbas and Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia followed talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday, during their first trip abroad to drum up Arab support since the death of Yasser Arafat on November 11.
The Palestinian leaders said they had briefed Fayez on the improved prospects of a resumption of peace talks with Israel.
Jordan fully backed efforts to attain an independent Palestinian state, Jordanian officials said.
"We feel that there is a chance to bring the peace process back on track," Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher told reporters. "We've expressed our full support for the Palestinian Authority. The focus will be on the political phase now."
Palestinians are trying to promote the Quartet's road map to Mideast peace, Muasher said, calling on Israel to create a "more conducive atmosphere" for a resumption of talks.
"We are not only talking here of halting the Israeli offensives but also a security calm-down and an Israeli withdrawal to ensure holding the Palestinian elections," Muasher said.
Abbas said Jordan would provide the Palestinians with security training along with Egypt, which on Sunday offered to help the Palestinian Authority prepare to maintain security in Gaza after Israel's planned withdrawal.
Abbas said the Palestinian team would visit Syria on December 6.

PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei and Interim PA Chairman Rouhi Fatouh visited Egypt and Jordan Sunday and Monday to ask for assistance in maintaining security during and after the January 9 election, PA Negotiations Minister Saeb Erekat said. They also sought support for their demand that Israel's disengagement plan is only the first step on the road map.

The visit to Jordan followed a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday.
Abbas said Jordan would provide the PA with security training, along with Egypt, which promised to help maintain security after an IDF withdrawal.
Abbas presented Mubarak and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman with the PA security plans for the Gaza Strip and the election, a senior PA official said.
The PA now wants Egypt to convince Israel to accept the plan and guarantee that police will be safe in areas where they will be deployed, and to allow armed forces to maintain security in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank during the election, former Yasser Arafat aide Bassam Abu Sharif said.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and Suleiman will visit Israel on Wednesday to discuss the disengagement plan and the PA's security plan, he added.
On Thursday, they will meet with the PA leaders in Ramallah.
The PA is in the process of forming a special Gaza police force of 750 men to fight lawlessness and end the security chaos there, one official said. Egypt is likely to train members of the force. Other states have also offered to train the special force.
However, the PA can only maintain security effectively once it has refurbished its security services, Abbas said. To do so, it needs immediate financial support and equipment from donors.
"They all make promises, but so far we've received very little help," a PA official said.
Abbas, Qurei, and Fatouh will travel to Syria on December 6, where aside fro government officials they will probably meet representatives of Damascus-based Palestinian factions. They want Hamas and Islamic Jihad to agree to a truce.
Hamas leaders in Damascus responded Monday to West Bank Hamas leader Sheikh Hassan Yusuf's proposal for a 10-year truce to give negotiations a chance. They said he only represents himself. AP contributed to this report.

Palestinian leaders arrived in Jordan for visit

AMMAN, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A top Palestinian delegation arrived here Sunday to discuss with the Jordanian side on latest developments in the Palestinian territories, the official Petra News Agency reported.
The delegation includes Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)executive committee chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei and Palestinian National Authority (PNA)interim President Rawhi Fattouh. The Palestinian leaders is expected to meet with Jordan's King Abdullah II and Prime Minister Faisal Fayez on Monday, said Jordanian government spokeswoman Asma Khader. They will brief Jordanian officials on the outcome of their talks with US and EU officials who visited Ramallah recently,Khader said, adding the two sides will discuss means to revive the Mideast peace process and resume the negotiations with Israel. Jordan is the second stop of the Palestinian leaders' regional tour, which has taken them to Egypt. They will leave for Syria after visit to Jordan.
