Hamas vows to keep weapons

Dec. 30 - Hamas vowed to keep its weapons and use them as a bargaining tool at their 18th anniversary meeting outside of Damascus.

"No one on earth can take away our weapons and our right to resistance - we say what we had always said in every occasion and on television channels we will hold on to the resistance weapons and the option of resistance as a strategic option until we free the last part of the Palestine land and the return of the last Palestine refugees (to Palestine)," Hamas Poliburo member Khaled Meshaal told an audience at Aluarmouk Refugee Camp.

Meshal said that Hamas, who are expected to do well in the upcoming Palestinian election, would enter politics on its own terms.

"We will show the United States and Israel and the international community that the Palestine people learned their lesson - today the Palestine people and all the factions insist on putting the resistance next to politics and social services without compromising. We will enter the parliament and the political field-- we will establish our own Palestine leadership background without abandoning any part of Palestine. We will show them that we Hamas and all the Palestine factions and people we will practice politics in a new language without running to meet the enemy (Israel)," said Meshaal.

Rival wings of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement reunited on Wednesday (December 28) to fight off a January election challenge by the militant Islamic group Hamas.

The group submitted a joint list of candidates for the Jan. 25 ballot, merging competing lists presented two weeks ago by veteran leaders and a young guard seeking a bigger say.

The different wings of Fatah hold the same political positions and support talks with Israel for a state in the occupied West Bank and also the Gaza Strip, unlike Hamas, which wants to destroy Israel. Hamas has built its popularity on an image less tainted by graft as well as its charity network. Hamas fighters are also generally seen as more disciplined than Fatah forces. Both have carried out suicide bombings.
