Families of seven French victims will ask France’s chief anti-terror judge, Jean-Louis Brugiere, to question Arafat “as soon as his physical condition allows it,” the families’ attorney Michel Calvo told reporters in Paris.
They could complicate things for the French government, which traditionally has courted Arafat. French President Jacques Chirac personally granted the Palestinian request for Arafat to receive treatment in Paris. “All I can do today is to send him my warmest wishes that he regains his health as quickly as possible,” he told reporters in Rome.
Chirac may find himself in an uncomfortable position as terrorist victims demand justice while the French government freely allows some of Arafat’s chief terrorists to remain in France and possible try to give orders to the Palestinian Authority in the name of Arafat.
France also may be in a stronger position to influence American policy towards Israel now that it can claim responsibility for Arafat’s health.
