With a muffled thump Munir Abu- Kishek's red glove lands another blow on the punch-bag he hung from a ceiling beam a few minutes earlier. A few more punches and he takes a quick breather.

Kishek, 26, steps into the middle of the room and shadow boxes for several minutes, the sound of his breath matching the sound his punch would make if he had a real opponent.

A few more routines and Kishek is done for the morning. And as sweat evaporates from his body in the poorly lit, unheated training room of the Askar Club, he quickly unravels the blue bandages around his fists.

Kishek, a lightweight boxer, is an anomaly in the Askar refugee camp located just outside Nablus. Here, survival is the issue, and professional sports are something you watch on television, if you own one.

But that hasn't stopped Kishek. A champion in several Arab contests, Kishek won the bronze medal in the Asian games, held in Busan, South Korea, last summer. For him, this was an important stepping stone to the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

"My dream is to go to Athens, because I [would be] the first boxer from Palestine to go [to the Olympics]."

But few around the camp seem to appreciate Kishek's achievements. In fact, most were probably totally unaware of his success before foreign media started to visit his neighbourhood. The men standing in the market just outside his house are more interested in selling the produce of their land than what has been going on in Kishek's life.

And even inside his own home, he downplays his achievements -- there is only one championship cup on display in his living room. He keeps the rest of his medals, souvenirs of his victories in Busan and Arab championships in Egypt and Iraq, in the bedroom he shares with his wife and five-month-old child. Nevertheless, his achievements in the boxing ring are undoubtedly a cause for pride.

His boxing idols are the legendary Mohamed Ali, and the flamboyant British boxer "Prince" Nasim Hamad. But as he gets dressed to head outside, the spark in his eyes quickly fades. And once dressed, he becomes quiet and timid; humbled, perhaps, by posters on the training room wall paying tribute to a child martyr and the Intifada -- a stark reminder of the explosive situation that exists around him.

Kishek's victories have been achieved with less training than he actually needs. He has very few people to spar with, and he can't even jog from his house to the club, a kilometre away.

"I can't run, it's too dangerous," he said. "Sometimes I get a lift in a passing car, sometimes I walk."

Nablus witnessed some of the heaviest fighting during the Israeli Army's Operation Defensive Shield last April, when Palestinian gunmen holed up in the old city, or Kasbah area, and fought prolonged bloody battles against Israeli Army troops.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), the city and its environs have been under curfew for over 150 hours, or 5 continuous months since then.

Today, with much of the Palestinian resistance put down, the district is completely under Israeli Army control. However, most of the people continue to go about their normal business, even though the curfew has not been officially lifted. They know the tanks could come back at any moment so they try not to spend too much time in transit.

Kishek, like most locals, has become an expert on tank movements. "If the tanks take that road," says Kishek pointing behind the camp, "they are going around. If they take another road, they are coming in."

It would not be the first time for the tanks to come into Askar Camp. The entrance to Kishek's house is pock- marked by heavy artillery fire from those early days of fighting.

Training, not surprisingly, consumes most of Kishek's days, and he has even had to give up work to train. But with unemployment among the Palestinians reaching 80 per cent in some areas, there isn't much work to be had.

The Kishek clan in the Askar camp owns some land in the surrounding area, but say they haven't been able to till or harvest it for over a year for fear of encountering Israeli soldiers or settlers.

And without formal sponsors, Munir -- the first ever Palestinian Olympic boxing hopeful -- has had to rely on small donations from local Palestinian Authority governors or legislatures for backing. Kishek doesn't complain, but it is obvious he has little financial support.

But Munir Abu-Kishek might be getting the break he needs and deserves. He will be setting off for Australia to train with the Australian team in the run-up to the Athens Olympic Games. He will be with them for under a year and is very excited at the prospect.

At the age of 26, this is his last chance to compete in a summer Olympics, and he doesn't want to come back empty- handed.

But he knows there is a price to pay. He must leave behind his wife and his son, who was born while he was away at the Arab championship in Egypt.

"I will miss them very much but I have a responsibility."
