More trials for ADI Bushmaster
Christopher F Foss
Following a highly successful series of trials in the United Arab Emirates last year, the ADI Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicle (IMV) is hoping to capture a slice of the market for this type of vehicle. At IDEX 2005, the Bushmaster IMV is taking part in the mobility demonstration together with the ADI High Mobility Engineering Vehicle, which is already in quantity production.
In 2003 ADI supplied a batch of pre-production vehicles to the Australian Army and three vehicles underwent five months of trials, clocking up more than 110,000km under a variety of operational conditions. The Bushmaster is now in full-scale production for the Australian armed forces, who have ordered a total of 300 units. So far about 15 Bushmaster IMV have been completed.
The baseline Bushmaster IMV can carry 10 people (2 + 8) over extended distances so that they arrive in a condition ready to fight. In addition to the baseline troop carrier, prototypes of the first three Bushmaster variants are now being built in ambulance, command and engineer/assault pioneer configurations. Still at the design stage are mortar carrier and direct fire weapons carrier.
Compared with many wheeled armoured vehicles, the Bushmaster IMV has a high level of protection, especially against anti-tank mines.
Standard equipment includes automatic transmission, power steering and a central tyre inflation system that allows the driver to adjust tyre pressure to suit the terrain being crossed. Optional equipment includes a hydraulic winch that can be used to the front or rear.
